Out&About

The Lyons Family

By Paddy McCarthy

I just love bringing as much good news to you as possible on my Out&About travels to let you know that the Irish community is stronger than ever. Now here is a man that I personally know very well, who has succeeded so very well in his profession as a lawyer and now is nominee for the NYS Supreme Court, Judge Desmond Lyons. Before I go any further, I personally knew his dad a very well a proud Corkman, Dr. Michael Lyons (RIP) who was very well known in the Irish Community in New York. I just got this very exciting news from his son Desmond: “Hope all is well. Just wanted to let you know I officially secured the democratic nomination for NYS Supreme Court in the 9th Judicial District (Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess and Orange counties). Anything you can do to spread the word for this son of a Corkman would be greatly appreciated!” And that is what I am doing here in my Out&About column to get the word out. We’ll talk soon, Des! Now isn’t that very nice to let me know of this great appointment and I am so proud of him. Here is more of what Desmond Lyons has said: “For over 30 years, I’ve served our communities—as a judge, prosecutor, attorney, professor, and volunteer. I currently serve as Village Justice in Irvington and as an Acting Judge in multiple courts across Westchester County, handling a wide range of civil and criminal matters. I’ve always approached the law with fairness, independence, and respect for every person who comes before the court.

Judge Desmond Lyons

“The 9th Judicial District is one of the largest and most diverse in New York—covering Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Orange counties. I’ve lived here my entire life and practiced law throughout the region. I believe justice must be fair, consistent, and accessible to all. A good judge applies the law with clarity and care while understanding the real-world challenges people face.

“Outside the courtroom, I’ve taught law and ethics at Fordham University and volunteered with organizations that support children, families, and those in need. I’ve been honored with professional recognition, but my greatest privilege is the trust placed in me by those I serve.

“I’m running for Supreme Court Justice because experience, integrity, and commitment matter. I would be honored to earn your support.”

This is the Lyons family who I am very sure are very proud of their husband and father, so spread the word on his nomination for Supreme Judge, what a celebration that will be as I’m sure it will.

I also have news of a golf outing called the John Browne Memorial Cup that will be held on September 14th. The proceeds will benefit a very good charity that has been supported a very long time by two great musicians, the late Mick Maloney and the great balladeer himself Donie Carroll from Cork who have been supporting the Mercy Center Bangkok which is a worthy Charitable cause. All members and friends are welcome plus all golfers who would like to participate in this great event. Check out the John Browne Memorial Cup ad on both The Irish Examiner USA website (at www.irishexaminerusa.com) and in the digital newspaper for more information on sponsorship.

I hope to see you all next week when I am Out&About again…
