Was it a good summer? I think so as I traveled to Newport, Waterford, Montreal and Ireland now where would yea get it, only in America? The fun is not over yet though as the Harvest Moon Ball at the Irish American Center (297 Willis Avenue) in Mineola. This year’s honorees are Tony and Maureen Jackson and PJ and Kit Smith while music will be provided by The Tommy Flynn Band. Tickets are $85 per person which includes dinner and an open bar. You can reserve your place by calling (516) 746-9392 or e-mailing irishamericansocietyny@gmail.com
This is the second biggest event of the year for the Irish American Society in Mineola. There will be a cocktail period from 7 pm to 8:30 pm, followed by a dinner and dance from 8:30 pm to 12.30 am allowing you to dance the night away. This event is going to be something let me tell yea!
The next came in from a great friend of mine, Marty Glennon and I am sure it will definitely interest you so I have to let you know about it. Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Long Island, Queens) and Congressman Peter King (R-NY) have introduced a Bipartisan Resolution Supporting Peace on the Island of Ireland. This resolution calls for continued dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the Brexit process, with particular emphasis on preventing a hard border.
The resolution specifically: Urges the United Kingdom and European Union to ensure that Brexit does not threaten peace on the island of Ireland; Strongly opposes the reintroduction of a hard border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland Insists that any trade agreements between the United States and United Kingdom are contingent on meeting the Good Friday Agreement’s obligations; Calls for continued dialogue between all parties in Northern Ireland in order to overcome political challenges and get power-sharing institutions operating again; and Expresses support for the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement in order to fulfill the Martin McGuinness Principles: Equality, Truth, Respect, and Self-Determination.
“Ireland is one of the oldest and closest friends of the United States, and the Irish people have been a crucial part of the fabric of our nation for well over a century. We need to ensure that Brexit and other political challenges don’t threaten the peace process by reintroducing a hard border,” said Congressman Suozzi. “As a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over any trade agreements between the United States and United Kingdom, I will fight to make a soft border and implementation of the Good Friday Agreement requirements for any negotiation.”
In addition to being a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Congressman Suozzi is also a member of the bipartisan Friends of Ireland.
On September 12, Suozzi joined Congressman Richard Neal, Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and Friends of Ireland, for a meeting with Sinn Féin Chief Negotiator Conor Murphy on the status of Brexit and the peace process.
I am so privileged to tell you all this and having two well-known Congressmen from opposing sides of the Congress to agree is just fabulous, good on yea lads.
On Tuesday I visited the Fitzpatrick Grand Central Hotel (141 East 44th Street, New York; www.fitzpatrickhotels.com) with my editor Grahame Curtis for an interview with a very special person that you will read about in the coming weeks.
We were seated in the hotel’s Wheeltapper Pub and Patio that also has outdoors patio and is very comfortable, let me tell you and highly recommended. The service is just superb all the way from the manager Patrick Lyman to bartender Inna and server Abdou. It was very professional and hospitable.
This hotel is very central and easy walking distance from Grand Central Station on 42nd Street so you have to stop by to experience the atmosphere which, again, is highly recommended.
See you all again next week when I am Out&About again.
