Out&About

Maurice ‘Mossie’ Keane, RIP
By Paddy McCarthy

Hello readers, just to let you know that I am just back from Ireland after a few days in Cork. There was not much sun and lots of raindrops but now, that did not stop me from having a good time because I did.

I got to see my family and friends on my visit and I’ll tell you what, if you go to Cork City, I recommend you stay at the Metropole Hotel that is right in the city and yes, near all the shopping that you need.

Now, as far as bars and restaurants are concerned, they are all at your fingertips and all within walking distance. Ah, I love it. At one of the establishments called Canty’s on Winthrop Street I went to see the famous Joe Mac from the Dixies era where he was providing the entertainment to a packed house and again, he’s never lost it.

To tell you the truth I had a ball and went to see Tipperary beat Kilkenny again in another fine establishment in the Douglas area called John O’ and I am glad to say I had another great time with my family.

Now I think that is enough about me.

I have a little bit of sad news that was sent in to me about one beautiful lady, Clare Enright. It said, “To All Members of the Dublin Society of New York. It is with a sad heart that I reach out to let you know of the passing of Clare Enright. Clare was one of the longest serving members of the Dublin Society, and a great character at our social  gatherings.”

The wake is at Dalton Funeral Home (47 Jerusalem  Avenue, Hicksville) on Thursday, August 22, from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. The funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Church (500 Oyster Bay Road in Hicksville) on Friday at 10 am with the burial at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton at 12pm.

Shane Humphries, President of the Dublin Society of NY, concluded saying “Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.” (May her soul be on Gods right hand)

The Irish Repertory Theatre have been busy with lots of fabulous shows again and here is another one, the Dublin Carol on the Francis J.Greenburg Mainstage by none other than Conor McPherson, directed by Ciarán O’Reilly and staring Jeffrey Bean, Cillian Hegarty, and Sarah Street. The show will run from September 20 to November 10.

John Plunkett is haunted by memories of a shameful past and shattered life. On Christmas Eve, an unexpected visit from his estranged daughter, Mary, forces John to confront his demons and grapple with his chance at redemption.

Irish Rep proudly begins its 2019-2020 season with Dublin Carol, Conor McPherson’s revelatory journey towards salvation, which premiered in 2000 at the Royal Court in London and made its US premiere at The Atlantic Theater in 2003.

Dublin Carol is Irish Rep’s sixth McPherson play; past productions include St. Nicholas (2010), The Weir (2013 and 2015), Port Authority (2014), Shining City (2016), and The Seafarer (2018).

How do they do it? I don’t know. but they do. Now that is something. Tickets can be obtained from their Box Office at 132 West 22nd Street, by phone on (212) 727-2737 or at www.irishrep.org.

In more sad news, Maurice ‘Mossie’ Keane, father of former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland footballer Roy Keane has died after a long illness.

He suffered a stroke late last year and passed away in the Heather Care Home at Cork Orthopaedic Hospital last Wednesday.

Roy Keane grew up in Ballinderry Park in Mayfield on the northside of the city as the second youngest child in his family. Mossie and his wife Marie have five children, Roy, Denis, Johnson, Pat, and daughter Hilary.

Just a reminder that it’s coming! Yes it’s coming time for the Tug Boat Roundup in Waterford in the southern-most municipality in Saratoga County. Bordering Rensselaer County across the Hudson River and Albany County across the Mohawk River, Waterford is the gateway to Erie and Champlain Canals.

The village of Waterford is a village within the Town of Waterford. The village was founded in 1794 and is the oldest continually incorporated village in the United States.

The town was founded in 1816 when Halfmoon was split into the town of Halfmoon and the town of Waterford, taking on the name of the village.

The Tugboat Roundup is a town event which this year runs from September 6 to 8. Waterford is home to the Waterford Flight. When the Erie-Barge Canal opened in 1917, five large locks on the Waterford side of the canal replaced the original sixteen locks that had brought the old canal through Cohoes, navigating around the Cohoes Falls.

With my Out&About this week, well as you know I was away in Ireland, and as I always say “somebody has to do it.”

I know what you are saying I still should have done it and the answer is I was not Out&About here in the Big Apple York so I cannot bring you more of the gossip like I always do. What happens in Ireland stays in Ireland, did I say that right? Just kidding ha, ha!

See you all again next week when I am Out&About again.
