Fionnula Flanagan
By Paddy McCarthy

It’s very sad, but I begin my column to tell about another great friend who passed away last weekend after a long battle with cancer. Longtime detective-turned-news reporter Mike Sheehan — known for his hand in investigating the “Preppy Killer” and “Central Park Five” cases — died on Friday, succumbing to his illness at around 8 pm at New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital. He was 71.

Mike was a top-class detective in his job with the NYPD. Sheehan was one of the lead detectives who worked the 1989 Central Park jogger case. He also had a hand in solving the Robert Chambers “preppy killer” case of August 1986 plus a lot more.

He left the force after 25 years on the job and joined Fox 5 as a reporter. Mike is survived by his wife Denise and daughter Clair.

I myself and all the staff at The Irish Examiner would like to send our condolences to the family, R.I.P.

I would also like to send our deepest sympathies to Dan Dennehy on the passing of his mom Dora R.I.P.

The Irish Repertory Theatre has a lot going on at the moment and now they’re ready with another big hit from the novel Ulysses by James Joyce. ‘YES! Reflections of Molly Bloom’ was adapted for the stage by Aedín Moloney and Colum McCann with music by Paddy Moloney (of The Chieftains) and directed by Kira Simring, this new production features actor Aedín Moloney. The world premiere presented by the Irish Repertory Theatre, in association with Gabriel Byrne in the W. Scott McLucas Studio Theatre began on June 7th and runs until July7th.

I can tell that I know this lady very well and boy can she perform! As Gabriel Byrne said: “Aedín Moloney is thrilling in her adaptation, along with Colum McCann, of Molly Bloom’s soliloquy.”

Here is a small summary of the story: Molly Bloom’s husband has just come home and fallen asleep in their Dublin row house. Molly – a daughter, a mother, a lover and a long suffering wife – patrols the pathways of her wild and leaping consciousness. She is lustful. Scared. Exuberant. Heartbreakingly lonely. Vivaciously reckless. And profoundly funny.

Written one hundred years ago, Joyce’s words seem carved not just for today, but tomorrow too. Moloney’s one-woman performance is a tribute to the enduring mysteries of loss and love – and the affirmation found, yes, in between.

Don’t miss the world premiere of YES! Reflections of Molly Bloom! You can book your tickets at The Irish Repertory Theatre’s box office at 132 West 22nd Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues), by calling (212) 727-2737 or online at irishrep.org.
