Joanie Madden, the recipient of this year’s Irish American Writers and Artists’ Eugene O’Neill Award
The Emerald Isle Immigration Center celebrated their 30th Anniversary, a time in which they have been a leader advocating for immigrant’s rights. Monday saw a capacity turn out at at The Manhattan Club at Rosie O’Grady’s (201 West 52nd Street on the corner of 7th Avenue) but unfortunately I was not able to make it as I was not feeling well with a stomach upset; please forgive me Siobhan.

They continue to need the support of the entire community in order to sustain the critical and increasing demand for their services and on the evening they were acknowledging the dedicated staff, founders and early leaders whilst also showcasing some clients that have helped them along the way.

The New Victory Theater is presenting a new show called Velocity in which award-winning Irish Steppers bring contemporary Celtic dance moves to Times Square.

Velocity is a high-octane celebration of Irish dance co-created by the Guinness World Record-holding “Fastest Feet in the World” James Devine and five-time World Irish Dance Champion David Geaney. Award-winning Irish dancers David Geaney, AnneMarie Keaney and Gabriella Wood tackle impossible scuffles, shuffles and every time step in between. Backed by a rocking Celtic band and DJ, this intimate, no-nonsense jam session takes tap into the 21st century.

Don’t miss this thrilling show as it takes center stage at The New Victory Theater from November 16th to the 25th.

Yes, they have done it again: The Irish Repertory Theatre is proud to present A Child’s Christmas In Wales by Dylan Thomas. Adapted and directed by Charlotte Moore, A Child’s Christmas In Wales begins performances on November 28th at Irish Rep Theatre (132 West 22nd Street) on the Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage, with an opening night set for December 3rd, and will run through December 30th.

This holiday season experience a joyous musical celebration of Dylan Thomas’s iconic story, A Child’s Christmas in Wales, the “never to be forgotten day at the end of the unremembered year,” when songs are sung, cakes and sweets are abundant, and the frozen city parks are laden with mysteries and adventures for wild boys and girls to explore.

This favorite Irish Rep tradition features both classic and contemporary Christmas music interwoven with Thomas’s story of a snowy Christmas Day in Wales.

The Irish Rep previously staged A Child’s Christmas in Wales in 2010, directed by Moore, in a production that The Associated Press said “leave[s] the audience feeling as though they’re tucked inside a cozy, musical snowglobe.” The production was revived, by popular demand, for the 2011 and 2015 holiday seasons.

A Child’s Christmas In Wales will feature musical direction by John Bell (On A Clear Day You Can See Forever), scenic design by James Morgan (On A Clear Day You Can See Forever), costume design by Barbara A. Bell (A Taste of Honey), and lighting design by Michael Gottlieb (Woman and Scarecrow). Pamela Brusoski (The Home Place) will serve as Production Stage Manager.

The performance schedule for A Child’s Christmas In Wales is as follows: Wednesdays at 3pm and 8pm; Thursdays at 7pm; Fridays at 8pm; Saturdays at 3pm and 8pm; and Sundays at 3pm. There will however be no 8pm performance on Wednesday, December 5th.

Tickets to A Child’s Christmas in Wales range from $50 to $70 and are available through Irish Rep’s box office at (212) 727-2737 or online at www.irishrep.org.

The Irish American Writers and Artists’ 2018 Eugene O’Neill Award will be presented to Joanie Madden at an award ceremony that will be held from 6 pm to 9pm on Monday, November 12th at The Manhattan Club, upstairs at Rosie O’Grady’s. If you haven’t yet bought your tickets, they are hoping that you’re able to join them.

I will be there to cheer on a great friend of mine, she does not know it yet, just kidding and that is Joanie Madden who has been entertaining us for a couple of centuries with her group Cherish the Ladies. The award is so well deserved Joanie!
See you all again next week when I am Out&About.
