Out&About

By Paddy McCarthy

I visited Stamford, Connecticut with my wife Patricia for the weekend while I was Out&About to visit my daughter Christina and her husband Kevin Coyne, and of course their Golden Doodle dog Tootsie, I have to mentions her as she won’t forget it. What a beautiful city it is and there are lots of Irish people living there going back generations and it’s very easy to walk around as well. I did check out the restaurant and bar businesses there too, well someone has to do it, and it seems like it’s got everything for everyone’s taste, so I can say it is very well recommended. I also found that there’s a lot of highrise office building and residential buildings there and it’s very easy to get around it. We got to eat at The Capital Grille Steak House and again it was mouthwatering food that was just fabulous, ahh somebody has to do it so why not me.

Now for one of the biggest days of the year coming up and that is to wish you all a Happy Mother’s Day. I think about my own mother almost every day. She passed away after a short illness at an early age of 61(RIP) at home in Cork, Ireland. Like all mothers she was the link that kept us all going and when she died the link was broken forever, but great memories let me tell yea, even though my dad died just four months earlier.

Now for joyful times I am giving you all this Mother’s Day Message for Sunday, May 11th a little bit early as I will be in Ireland for a few days. So, to all the readers of my Out&About and to all the friends of The Irish Examiner USA I have this special message for you all to not to forget your mother: “Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms, moms-to-be, stepmoms, bonus moms, and mother figures out there! This day Sunday, May 11th, is the day you celebrate your strength, your love, your patience, and your endless sacrifices. Whether you’re a mom yourself or you carry the spirit of one in the way you care for others—know that you are seen, appreciated, and deeply loved. Wishing you a day full of peace, joy, and well-deserved rest. Wishing you all a day full of love, joy, and moments that remind you just how cherished you truly are.”

This notice came to me from the WRBA who have announced The Great Woodhaven Yard Sale for 2025: “The Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association (WRBA) has announced that it will be hosting the 2025 edition of its community favorite, The Great Woodhaven Yard Sale (TGWYS), over two Saturdays in June. TGWYS will be held on Saturday, June 7th, and Saturday, June 14th, between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. This event – which launched in 2013 – encourages Woodhaven residents to simultaneously hold yard sales to attract shoppers from its own and surrounding communities.

“Last held in June of 2024, the WRBA is again happy to be able to have community members gather with neighbors as participants and shoppers to celebrate one of the things that makes Woodhaven special. The sole rain-date for the event is Sunday, June 14th.

“Any household wishing to participate is being asked to use the sign-up form, which can be accessed at docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdHXo-tvRMC5C13Phm118jQ7_EF5Y6m5Z-M-r9oopDuwgo7BQ/viewform?usp=pp_url.

“As we get closer to the event the WRBA will be posting the list of participating households at their event page on facebook.com/thegreatwoodhavenyardsale. Access to the event is free for participanting homes and shoppers.

Hope to see you all again when I’m Out&About again…
