Out&About

Brian Dunleavy, RIP

By Paddy McCarthy

I thought that I have seen it all as far as the weather was concerned last Saturday, Sunday and Monday, they were the worst I have witnessed for a very long time. Where I live in Long Island, we had trees down and roads in Stony Brook’s Harbor Road collapsed after overnight flash floods and flooding all over the place and the rain never stopped for hours. As I’ve said before I am not the weatherman, just an observer of all that was happening all around me but I nearly had get out my boat to get around, just kidding as it was not that bad. I did venture Out&About to check on things around my neighborhood to see how things were with my neighbors and check that everyone was safe; yes, all was fine with everybody.

Now for some brighter things that are happening as I was asked to give this event that I am sure will interest all you golfers out there a mention. The St Patrick’s Day Foundation NYC will hold their Annual Golf Outing at Garden City Country Club (1206 Stewart Ave. in Garden City) on September 23, with registration and breakfast starting at 10.30 am and a shotgun start set for 12.30 pm. After the golf, there’s a Cocktail Party starting at 5:30 pm followed by a buffet dinner that begins at 6:30 pm. RSVP no later than Monday, September 9. For additional information e-mail Golf@StPatricksDayFoundation.org or call (718) 231-4400.

Now that I’m on the subject of golf, here is another event that might also interest you. The Arc Westchester has announced its annual ‘Golfing for Kids’ golf outing, scheduled for September 16, to be held at Knollwood Country Club in Elmsford. This year’s event promises to be a memorable day filled with fun, food, and philanthropy, all in support of their Children’s School for Early Development, one of the largest providers of community-based, specialized services for young children with developmental disabilities in Westchester County. Registration and brunch starts at 10:30 am with a shotgun tee time of 11:30 am. The cocktail reception begins at 4:30 pm followed by dinner and program from 5.30 pm. There’s also a Special Golf Clinic sponsored by MGA for 15-20 adults with disabilities supported by The Arc Westchester.  Major Sponsor Pepe Auto Group in White Plains will provide the hole-in-one prize, a new luxury vehicle. For more information, to register, or to donate, visit arcwestchester.org/GFK2024 or contact Todd Bazzini at (914) 495-4556.

Here I am going to give a bit of sad news of a famous television presenter who I got to meet a few years ago at a Rosie O’Grady’s event. US talk show host Phil Donahue has died at the age of 88. The presenter died at his home on Sunday after a long illness and surrounded by family. Donahue, who created and hosted The Phil Donahue Show, was considered the “king of daytime talk” in the US. Over his career, Donahue interviewed well-known figures including Nelson Mandela, Muhammad Ali, Sammy Davis Jr, Sir Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg, Robin Williams, Dolly Parton and Michael J Fox.

Brian Dunleavy, RIP, was a great friend of Andy Cooney and a great son of Ireland in Detroit.  I think his passing is newsworthy, well I do as well as that is what my Out&About is all about. Brian died on August 16 after a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 66.

One of eight children, Dunleavy was born in Detroit to a family that embraced its Catholic faith and its Irish heritage. His father and his uncle both ran Irish bars in Detroit and the family learned early on to help raise money for their churches and their schools. We here at The Irish Examiner USA would like to send our condolences to the Dunleavy family on the passing.

Well, it was not one of my best Out&About columns as the news and gossip that I wish was much better than I reported as it was a little sad and bit happy. I do hope to see you all again next week with another bit of gossip…
