Out&About

The late Brendan Ward with his wife Breedge and Nuala O’Connor
I am starting my Out&About on a very sad note that came from a friend of this paper. Her name is Nuala O’Connor, owner of Ward Travel and former Tour Manager with Aer Lingus who mailed to say: “It is with sadness that I announce Brendan Ward went peacefully to heaven … Brendan firstly was dedicated to Breedge his wife of 70 years and his children. He was dedicated to his music and his work. I started working with them at Aer Lingus over 40 years ago I later bought their travel agency in Rockefeller Center. He was 97 years old please keep Breedge in your prayers she is 95. May Brendan Rest In Peace and May the Perpetual Light Shine upon Him.” I have to thank you Nuala as I had great respect for Brendan and his family and he will be dearly missed as again he was a big part of the Irish Community. Brendan was also a very accomplished musician and radio host, RIP. We here at The Irish Examiner USA send out condolences to his wife Breedge and family. We will have Brendan in our prayers.

None other than the man himself Roy Keane, football legend, paid a visit to Youghal, County Cork’s seaside resort last week in the heatwave in Ireland that was even hotter than in Rio. The fans just loved meeting him especially the young fans as Roy treated them all to ice cream. One of the fans said he is a really nice guy and very friendly and not what you see on television. I personally have not got to meet Roy even though his dad Maurice (well known in Cork as “Mossie”) had it set up for me to meet with his son Roy when I was home in Cork. This was well before the pandemic had happened and before lockdowns. The reason I did not get to meet him was because I was held up at another meeting that ran a bit late so I missed him. His late father was well known in Cork for his charm and wit and was always very proud of his son. Maurice” Mossie” Keane passed away in August 17th, 2019 after suffering a stroke, Rest in Peace.

This came to my attention from the Emerald Isle Immigration Center that should be very good information for you. Now the really good news that just came from Ireland is that the pubs are now open for indoor socializing. They opened on Monday with stipulations that has to be observed which I agree with. Taoiseach Micheál Martin said it was a “very significant day” for the hospitality sector. “It illustrates the continuing progress we’re making in reopening our society and our economy, bringing thousands of people back to work,” he said, and rightly so as it has been a very long period. I would like to say that there are a lot of happy faces.

The other good news is we can all fly home again with few restrictions and again that is a plus, so when you head back to Ireland just be careful and do everything by the book and then have a great time and of course have one on me… if they know me, ha-ha.

Well, the show must go on and that is what the Irish Repertory Theatre have been doing. Make sure you don’t miss “The Cordelia Dream” the new performance on screen from the Irish Rep, in association with Bonnie Timmermann. Written by Marina Carr, directed by Joe O’Byrne and starring Stephen Brennan and Danielle Ryan, this production was filmed at The New Theatre, Dublin from July 27-August 8. Irish Rep presenting the North American premiere. Carr is the author of more than 20 published plays, and has won numerous awards, including The Irish Times’ playwright award. The Cordelia Dream was commissioned by The Royal Shakespeare Company and closed their 2008 season at Wilton’s Music Hall in London. A rehearsed reading was produced in November 2020 in Cork’s Everyman Theatre. I have to get that in as I hope to be over there in September for a few days. Ah, I can’t wait.

Reservations are free but required to access this digital event. A donation of $25 is suggested for those who can afford to give. Irish Rep is committed to making art that is affordable and accessible. In pursuit of this goal, they have chosen to make this event free to the public. They do ask that if you are in a position to support them, you might consider making a donation. Your contribution will ensure that they can continue to offer top-quality events, hire artists and actors, and be ready to reopen as soon as it is safe to do so. Now where would yea get it, you have a lot of options and that is how the show goes on with your help. For more information call their Box Office at (212) 727-2737 or email Info@IrishRep.org.

Hope to see you all again when I am Out&About…
