Out&About

By Paddy McCarthy

I want to start with one of the most successful golf tournaments that has been happening for many years right now and should be well supported. The Eithne and Paddy Fitzpatrick Memorial Fund, was set up by well-known hotelier John Fitzpatrick in memory of his late parents, Eithne and Paddy. The Memorial Fund works to raise funds in support of a diverse group of worthy organizations across the island of Ireland that focus on a range of much needed initiatives including expanding educational opportunities, helping families and children affected by serious illnesses, delivering social services to the elderly and fostering peace and understanding between people in troubled areas.

Their next fundraising event, The Annual Eithne & Paddy Fitzpatrick Memorial Golf Tournament will take place on Tuesday, September 28th at The Sleepy Hollow Country Club. The Fund was established by John Fitzpatrick in 1994 and I have to say great credit to him in what he has been doing along with running two hotels in Manhattan New York City.

Founded in memory of Paddy and Eithne Fitzpatrick, the parents of John Fitzpatrick, to honor the charitable spirit they demonstrated throughout their lives, the fund’s mission is to make a significant positive impact on the lives of those in need. They work to raise funds in support of a diverse group of worthy organizations that focus on a range of crucial initiatives including expanding educational opportunities, helping families and children affected by serious illnesses, delivering social services to the elderly and fostering peace and understanding between people in troubled areas. I missed the sad passing of the late George T. Gibbons in my last issue. George was born in Cong, Co Mayo, Ireland. Beloved husband of the late Mary, loving father of the late George his son, Siobhan McEntee, Brendan, Eamon, Maureen, Bernadette, also survived by 6 grandchildren and brother of Alice O’Sullivan and Dorie Murphy, he was reposed at the Hess-Miller Funeral Home (64-19 Metropolitan Avenue Middle Village, NY on Friday. The Mass of Christian burial was at Our Lady of The Miraculous Medal Church on Saturday followed by interment at St. John Cemetery. I have known George since I emigrated to the United States in 1982, he was again one of the first people to give me advice in how best to adapt to living in New York along with the late Joe Murphy, RIP.

I just got the late news from the Irish Business Organization that a summer gathering is happening and open to all IBO members and friends to meet up this Thursday, July 15th for some informal summer happy hour gathering. Now here is the good news I am told that no RSVPs, no tickets, no speeches, only just friends getting together for a toast or two. So, join old friends and new on Thursday from 6 pm to 8 pm to “Network, Communicate, Reciprocate” at the Fitzpatrick Grand Central Wheeltapper Pub – in their outdoor street-side space on 44th Street at Lexington Ave.

The night is not over yet though as you then head to the after party for the Irish Culture Night at Paddy Reilly’s (519 2nd Avenue at 29th Street). There you will find Irish music and dance jam with the one and only Niall O’Leary and friends, with special guest Jake James, all are welcome! Boy, this sounds like a good evening so I will try and join them for one or two cold ones, ah someone has to do it.
