Out&About

By Paddy McCarthy

A great supporter of The Irish Examiner USA Doctor Kathy Reilly Fallon has been doing a tremendous amount of work seeing patients during this pandemic and deserves a lot of praise for what she has been doing. As she says herself we are the Fighting Irish and will rise above it all, now isn’t that very nice. The only downer was that Kathy herself contracted Covid-19 herself last March and thankfully battled it back for three weeks and then went back to work. She said she is very grateful to God to have survived it. Well we here at The Irish Examiner USA are very proud of you and all the work you do and we will support you anyway we can, thank you Kathy.

Brent O’Leary
From day one I always said that we are not a political paper and we are not, but we will support anyone that is here to help the Irish or Irish Americans and that is what I am doing right now. I got a request to give a mention to Brent O’Leary, a Queens native, attorney and community leader. He is presently running for New York City Council to represent the neighborhoods of Woodside, Sunnyside, Long Island City and Astoria. Now how Irish is that huh?

His grandparents are from County Clare and Brent studied abroad at University College Galway learning Irish history and law. Brent went to Trinity College in Hartford Connecticut and then after teaching English for a year in Japan returned and received his law degree from Boston University. As Brent learned Japanese in college, he returned to Japan and had a successful career as a business and finance lawyer in Japan helping US companies do business there.

After 10 years in Japan, Brent returned to New York and worked as a compliance attorney for the financial news company, Bloomberg LP. He also dedicated himself to community service. He founded the Hunters Point Civic Association which advocates for safety, schools, responsible development and other issues affecting the area and was one of the founders of the Boys & Girls Club of Sunnyside/Woodside to provide a safe environment and after school activities for the teens of the neighborhood.

He is President of the Board of Woodside on the Move which provides after school programs, tenant’s rights advocacy and senior services and works with Hour Children to support formerly incarcerated woman and their children. Brent also founded and runs a yearly food and toy drive which collects over 5000lb of food a year for local food pantries and thousands of new toys for underprivileged kids.

He was awarded the Admiral Edward Vernon Award for Community Service by the Astoria/Long Island City Lions for his community service and received a Proclamation from the New York State Assembly. We wish you the best of Irish luck Brent O’Leary!

The Irish Business Organization is one of the most progressive planners of events here in New York and have a welcome for all who are interested in looking for advice in business interests. Here is an event that should interest a wide audience just like you. Here we go, The IBO Women’s Networking Committee is pleased to present its June 2021 virtual networking event Turning the Covid-19 Corner Virtual Open Mic: Reimagining and Realizing Post-Pandemic New Beginnings which will be held on Thursday, June 17 at Noon EDT.

Join them as they explore the tri-state’s post-Covid recovery plans — impact and opportunities. Their musical guests are four sisters from County Donegal —  The Screaming Orphans – who will treat us to some cross-Atlantic sibling harmony and share their lockdown story, now that is something to hear about.

Their guest speaker is Patti Golden, Evelyn Hill Inc., Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Event, who will walk us through the steps she and the National Park Service have taken in reopening these national monuments known worldwide as a symbol of history and new beginnings. And they’ll revisit the history of County Cork’s Annie Moore, a symbol of those coming to America in search of a better life. On January 1, 1892, Annie stepped onto Ellis Island… and into history.
