Out & About

Some of the VIPs in attendance at The Taste The Flavors of The Emerald Isle event: Fr Joe Fitzgerald, Frank Ryan, Andrew Healey (President of ther FSOSP), Congressman Tom Suozzi, Eileen Cronin (their Honoree), Denis Mulcahy, Cathy Muscente, Molloy College, John Powers and event Chairman Dermot Kelly. Sitting center is Susan Gordon-Ryan.
I went to see Celtic Nights at the Sheen Center on Friday night and it was a nice performance. It could have done with a little bit more choreography as the singing was, well okay, but again they did perform very well and the audience seemed to love it so I do not want to be so critical.
I was in good company with the coffee man himself Pete Scally, Deirdre O’Hea and the artist herself Noelle Clancy; now how could I not have a good night with them.
Again I have to thank a great promoter Anita Daly who has brought the cream of Irish talent from Ireland to perform on stages here in North America for all the ex pats.
I have to tell you this since she does not get enough compliments and I know that Anita Daly puts her heart and soul into her business with what she does. She deserves a lot of praise with all the shows she promotes and the acts as well, good on yea Anita.
Talking about concerts I was at the Irish American Society for Suffolk, Nassau and Queens County’sevent in Mineola on Saturday night for the Louise Morrissey and Gary Gamble show direct from Ireland.
The support act was none other than Susan Gillespie and Gerard Corbett who were superb as always.
It seemed like all the stars were out as you had Joanie Madden from Cherish the Ladies and, of course, Noelle Clancy who is always about town and lots more. That said, I have to mention the lady that makes it all happen and that is Betty McLaughlin and boy does she work, good on yea Betty.
I have to admit it was a great night and again the entertainment was fabulous and they served a very nice pint of Guinness I might tell you too.
Eileen Cronin who is the host of The Long Ireland Show WRHU Hofstra University every Saturday from 2pm to 5 pm on 88.7FM has just been honored by the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick on Long Island.
The event, Taste the Flavors of the Emerald Isle, was held at the Hofstra University Club on Monday night to a capacity audience from 7pm to 10pm.
Talking about honors we have to say congratulations to Mae O’Driscoll who will be honored by the Irish Echo at their Irish Community Champions for 2018 awards ceremony on Friday April 27th, which will be held at Rosie O’Grady’s in New York City from 5:30 to 9 pm.
The event honors those who serve and advance worthy concerns and causes, and by doing so are living up to the best traditions of the American Irish. For information, call (212) 482-4818.
The 42nd Annual American Irish Teachers Association (AITA) Conference is scheduled for Saturday April 14th at the New York Irish Center (1040 Jackson Avenue, in Long Island City) from 9 am to 3:45 pm.
The AITA promotes Irish heritage and culture in America, including the mandated teaching of the Great Irish Famine curriculum in New York State and lobbying for the Irish Immigration Stamp.
This event is open and appealing to both educators and non-educators. For information contact Deborah Shea, Recording Secretary at (914) 235-2519. Conference tickets are $35 per person with a buffet lunch for $30 per person.
The Irish Repertory Theatre is going gang busters with the shows that are playing at the theatre and the great Charlotte Moore and Ciaran O’Reilly have done it again.
Heartfelt condolences are extended to Chris McLaughlin and family on the passing of their beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Edward, on Saturday 7 April.
A proud native New Yorker and Bronxite, Ed or Eddie, as he was known to family and friends, was equally proud of his Irish roots and was a past president of the Derry Society of New York.
A longtime delegate to the United Irish Counties, Ed also served as Recording Secretary during Mary McMullan’s presidency.  Ed and Chris and the McLaughlin Family are great supporters of the UICANY and could always be found at their annual dinner dance every January.
A true gentleman, Ed could regale you with stories of the 25-years he served on the NYPD.  A man with many accomplishments, Ed was also a veteran of the United States Air Force and United States Army.
May he rest in peace. Please keep Ed as well as Chris and their family in your prayers at this time.
See you all next week when I am Out&About again.
