Harvest season is celebrated in the US as much if not more than anywhere in the world, and for some, this is the right time.
From the annual Picklesburgh festival in Pittsburgh and to stone crab in Florida’s Paradise Coast, harvest season takes many forms. Wherever the season falls, it offers travelers a delicious opportunity to experience a destination through the ingredients, traditions and communities that shape its food culture.
Right now, up to the weekend, fans of lobster are indulging themselves in the annual festival that is one of the state’s most notable events and has taken place in Rockland since 1947.
This multi-day festival is rooted in local tradition, with visitors getting a real sense of the people behind Maine lobster, their daily interactions with nature, sustainable fishing practices, as well as how life on the coast is shaped today.
Festival participants can take part in harbor cruises, sample some of the 20,000 lbs of fresh lobster caught locally just hours before and attend a seafood cooking contest. Up in Canada, across the second weekend of August this year, visitors can celebrate some of the very best of Toronto’s diverse cuisine.
