Out&About

I hope you all had a great 4th of July holiday break and got to celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary. Now that is a very long time so I didn’t anticipate someone was still alive to remember that America got its independence from the United Kingdom…

I am just kidding when I said that, I had a wonderful time visiting Nantucket Island just off Cape Cod, Massachuetts. It is such a beautiful place to live and visit as it is so historical with an unbelievable history going back 12,000 years wow!
Now, when you might travel up to Nantucket you have to visit the Whale Museum as it is unbelievable and it has historic relics going all the way back thousands of years to when the island was an ice glacier thousands of years ago before humans set foot on it.

Nantucket was shaped by glaciers during the last Ice Age. The island along with Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod, was formed by the retreat of massive glaciers approximately 12,000 to 10,000 years ago. These glaciers left behind significant geological features, including moraines and outwash plains. Now to let you that the sediment deposited by the glaciers contributed to the formation of Nantucket and its sounding areas. I would have never known this except for my visit to the island where I got myself a lot of education about how all this happened centuries ago and learned a lot from the Museum Curators, as most of them are considered the heart of the museum and can give you the interpretation of each its own distinct title, so that’s how I now know all about the historic Nantucket Island where I sound like a true professional, ha, ha! No, I am not the Tourism Editor, just the Out&About columnist and still learning.

Ah, the beaches… if you wish to go to the beach which I did with the family to the ocean side of Nantucket that was recommended called Surfside Beach, Madaket Beach or Nobadeer Beach that we visited all of them as my son James loves to surf and all those were perfect for him. Now if you wish to have a calmer beach now that is me and it is also recommended for you, particularly if you are with small children which is what my grandchildren loved. Now the one for me that I especially recommend going to is Jetties Beach. Jetties has a restaurant called The Sandbar which has very good cocktails and foodie was like “holy, I’m home” as somebody has to enjoy it just like myself and I’m sure there are a lot more like me.

Talking about restaurants: there are loads of great restaurants on Nantucket and I recommend that you make reservations when possible, particulary during July and August. There are lots to chose from I am going to say that all of them are well worth a visit so here are some of them: Island Kitchen (particularly for brunch), The Sea Grille when you want selection of meat and fish along with deli sandwiches and to sit and be looking at the dynamite sunset, then you have The Galley Beach, and when you are looking for some Lobster you go The Lobster Trap Restaurant, yum, yum. Now for a good breakfast and smoothies that we all love you can go the Lemon Press. For burgers and beer? The Brotherhood of Thieves. I could go on and on as it is difficult to get a bad meal on this island. Eat well!

The Nantucket Meat and Fish Market has a wonderful selection of meat and fish along with deli sandwiches and baked goods to suite everyone as it has lots more. This island everything for everybody starting with the museum that I loved.
I hope you enjoyed reading this week’s Out&About as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you. See you all again next week when I am Out&About again…
