Britain’s Transport Secretary Grant Shapps described the group as \u201chigh-quality and experienced\u201d as he made the announcement.<\/p>\n
His predecessor Chris Grayling faced calls to resign earlier this year after handing a \u00a314 million contract to Seaborne Freight to run freight services, despite having no ships or trading history.<\/p>\n
The eight firms appointed to a freight procurement framework are Brittany Ferries, DFDS, Irish Ferries, P&O Ferries, Seatruck and Stena, as well as aviation firm Air Charter Services and train operator Eurotunnel.<\/p>\n
Their selection was based on a \u201cproven ability to manage high-quality projects and experience in freight operation\u201d, according to the UK’s Department for Transport (DfT).<\/p>\n
The firms will be able to bid for freight service contracts which will be offered when required.<\/p>\n
The DfT said the system will run for four years from the planned Brexit date of October 31.<\/p>\n
It claimed the initiative is a \u201cmuch faster and more efficient procurement process\u201d, adding that no taxpayers\u2019 money has been committed.<\/p>\n
The department said that the contracts will focus on ports and terminals away from areas \u201cforecast as most likely for potential disruption\u201d, meaning the freight terminals of Dover, Folkestone and Barking are not included.<\/p>\n
Last week, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was forced to reveal Operation Yellowhammer assessments of the impact of leaving the EU without an agreement, which included possible medical shortages, food price rises and major cross-channel trade delays.<\/p>\n
Mr Shapps said: \u201cPreparations to leave the EU on the 31 October are continuing at pace and we will do whatever it takes to ensure the flow of life-saving medicines into the UK.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis framework guarantees long-term national resilience and I\u2019m confident the combined expertise of these high quality and experienced firms appointed to the framework will ensure we are ready for Brexit day and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Seaborne Freight deal was among three contracts, worth more than \u00a3100 million, awarded by Mr Grayling to run extra services in the event of a no-deal Brexit on March 29.<\/p>\n
Brittany Ferries and DFDS were the other recipients.<\/p>\n
In March, the DfT paid \u00a333 million to Eurotunnel in an out-of-court settlement after the firm launched a High Court challenge in England claiming it was unfairly overlooked for the work.<\/p>\n
Following the delay to Brexit, the three contracts were scrapped at a cost to the taxpayer estimated at about \u00a350 million.<\/p>\n
