{"id":9078,"date":"2019-08-23T07:26:23","date_gmt":"2019-08-23T11:26:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=9078"},"modified":"2019-08-25T10:27:55","modified_gmt":"2019-08-25T14:27:55","slug":"dup-sought-curfews-in-the-north-during-the-troubles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=9078","title":{"rendered":"DUP Sought Curfews in The North During The Troubles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/2.18561193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9079\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/2.18561193.jpg 600w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/2.18561193-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Democratic Unionist proposals to introduce a curfew in Northern Ireland during the Troubles were rejected by the Government, official files revealed.<\/p>\n<p>ID cards, beefed up border security and steps to seal off west Belfast would also have been adopted had the British Government accepted former leader Ian Paisley\u2019s proposals.<\/p>\n<p>The suggestions were discussed in an historical memo from Downing Street released by the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI).<\/p>\n<p>A letter from a Downing Street official said: \u201cThe arguments against a curfew were seen as primarily political, singling out part of the UK for special treatment and alienating those people most affected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DUP\u2019s intervention was intended to tackle the deliberate orchestration of violence in republican areas to lure members of the security forces into a trap.<\/p>\n<p>The party said: \u201cA curfew would serve the dual purpose of hampering the terrorists from moving their explosives to their intended target during the hours of darkness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would serve to keep these hostile areas scrutinized by the security services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe curfew would have the added bonus of forcing the civilian population in the area concerned to press on the IRA to stop their campaign because of the inconvenience such a curfew would bring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1992, Mr Paisley also proposed the introduction of a \u201cring of steel\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The official memo said: \u201cIt was pointed out that the proposal by Mr Paisley on this in fact meant sealing off West Belfast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome action to seal off areas was already undertaken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kind of option Mr Paisley had in mind would not prevent arms being moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was suggested that the security forces would welcome the introduction of identity cards but officials felt they would be of limited value unless they were brought in throughout the UK, with the cooperation of the Republic of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>The official wrote: \u201cThere would probably be forgeries by the Provisional IRA.
