Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan stressed the UK must \u201chonor its commitment\u201d to the backstop \u2013 the measure aimed at preventing a hard border in Ireland which the British Prime Minister wants to see removed from the Brexit divorce deal.<\/p>\n
In a strongly-worded intervention, Mr Hogan warned that a hard Brexit will create a \u201cfoul atmosphere\u201d between the UK and the European Union.<\/p>\n
In a pointed reference to Mr Johnson, who has written a biography of Winston Churchill, he said: \u201cIn the event of a no-deal Brexit, the UK government\u2019s only Churchilian legacy will be \u2018never have so few done so much damage to so many\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Johnson\u2019s claim that the backstop is anti-democratic \u201cseems strange\u201d as it is \u201ccoming from an unelected prime minister\u201d, Mr Hogan is reported by Irish Independent to have said.<\/p>\n
In his speech in Carlingford, Mr Hogan is quoted as saying: \u201cIf the UK fails to prevent a crash-out Brexit they should be under no illusion regarding the foul atmosphere they will create with their EU partners and the serious consequences this will have for negotiating any future trade agreement.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe UK continues to negotiate based on its experience of being an EU member.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis misses the point completely: from the moment the UK came back to Brussels with the infamous red lines, the EU has negotiated on the basis of the UK opting for third country status.\u201d<\/p>\n
A hard Brexit would mean \u201cpain for everyone, but the worst pain will be felt by the people of the UK\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n
