The Little Gem<\/strong> has become a Big Gem as the show has been packing them in and has now been extended for an extra week. Now I did say a couple of weeks ago that the Little Gem would be a big hit and it is and yet again The Irish Repertory Theatre<\/strong> has done it. <\/p>\n

Little Gem\u00a0began previews on July 17 on the\u00a0Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage<\/strong>\u00a0and opened July 25 and will now play through September 8.<\/p>\n

The cast of\u00a0Little Gem\u00a0includes four-time Academy Award nominee and two-time Golden Globe Award winner\u00a0Marsha Mason<\/strong>\u00a0(The Goodbye Girl) as Kay,\u00a0Brenda Meaney<\/strong>\u00a0(Party Face) as Lorraine, and\u00a0Lauren O\u2019Leary<\/strong>\u00a0(The Awkward Years) as Amber.\u00a0Little Gem\u00a0features set design by\u00a0Meredith Ries<\/strong>\u00a0(Cute Activist), costume design by\u00a0Christopher Metzger<\/strong>\u00a0(Life Sucks), lighting design by\u00a0Michael O\u2019Connor<\/strong>\u00a0(Two by Friel), and sound design by\u00a0Ryan Rumery<\/strong>\u00a0(Be More Chill).\u00a0Arthur Atkinson<\/strong>\u00a0(Juno and the Paycock) serves as Production Stage Manager.<\/p>\n

Irish Rep also announced casting for the world premiere of\u00a0Kingfishers Catch Fire<\/strong> by\u00a0Robin Glendinning<\/strong>\u00a0(Jennifer\u2019s Holiday) and directed by\u00a0Kent Paul<\/strong>\u00a0(Lost in Yonkers).\u00a0Kingfishers Catch Fire\u00a0begins performances in the\u00a0W. Scott McLucas Studio Theatre<\/strong>\u00a0on September 11, with opening night set for September 22, for a limited run through October 20. <\/p>\n

The cast of\u00a0Kingfishers Catch Fire\u00a0will include\u00a0Sean Gormley<\/strong>\u00a0(Rebel in the Soul) as Monsignor Hugh O\u2019Flaherty and\u00a0Haskell King<\/strong>\u00a0(Please Continue) as Herbert Kappler. <\/p>\n

Here is a brief overview of the story: It\u2019s 1948 when Monsignor Hugh O\u2019Flaherty first visits the infamous Nazi Herbert Kappler in the Italian prison where Kappler is serving a life sentence for crimes against humanity. <\/p>\n

During World War II, the men were adversaries; Kappler was the head of the Gestapo in German-occupied Rome, and Monsignor O\u2019Flaherty was using the cover of Vatican neutrality to shelter and arrange for the escape of thousands of Allied servicemen and Jewish civilians. <\/p>\n

Kappler placed a bounty on O\u2019Flaherty\u2019s head, but O\u2019Flaherty evaded capture, earning the nickname \u201cThe Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican.\u201d <\/p>\n

When these two men meet after the war, profound questions of responsibility and redemption rattle the cages. Based on a true story,\u00a0Kingfishers Catch Fire\u00a0examines morality and personal culpability for actions taken during a devastating war.<\/p>\n

I almost forgot to tell yea that I was at the Queen <\/strong>concert with Adam Lambert<\/strong> on August 6 at Madison Square Garden<\/strong> which was sold out for their two nights. Now the late Freddie Mercury<\/strong> did appear on screen for one of the final encores that was just magic. I have to say this that Adam Lambert was just brilliant in what he did in singing with Queen and replacing Freddie; as you know nobody can do that really, but I will give him credit as he did not try to imitate Freddie as he sang in his own style and as I said, he was just brilliant with the rest of Queen who I also love and it was a great fit. <\/p>\n

Now to an event that should be well supported: The New York Correction Department Emerald Society 64th\u00a0Annual Scholarship Dinner Dance<\/strong> will be held on Friday, September 27 at Antun\u2019s<\/strong> in Queens Village (96-43 Springfield Blvd, Queens Village).\u00a0The festivities start at 7pm with Antun\u2019s Deluxe Cocktail Hour followed at 8pm with the Award Presentations, Open Bar, Dinner and Dancing until midnight. <\/p>\n

Entertainment for the evening will be provided by the NYCD Pipes & Drums<\/strong> and DJ Cash<\/strong>.\u00a0This year the Society will honor Correction Officer Lawrence McArdle Jr.<\/strong> (K9 Unit) as \u201cThe 2019 Irishman of the Year and Correction Officer Investigator Brian Weise<\/strong> (AIU) with \u201cThe 2019 President James Mulvey Award\u201d. The 2019 CO David J. Leahy Scholarship Recipient is Mary Corbett<\/strong>, daughter of CO Thomas Corbett<\/strong> (SOD). <\/p>\n

In conjunction with the 64th Anniversary Scholarship Dinner Dance the retired members of the Emerald Society will publish a commemorative souvenir journal. The 2019 Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan Memorial\u2008Golf Classic<\/strong> will be held on Monday, September 23 at Sands Point Golf Club<\/strong> in Sands Point, New York.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

So many of you from our loving Catholic Charities community know the incredible impact that Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan<\/strong> had on the lives of those we serve. For over 50 years, he dedicated himself to helping and advocating for our most vulnerable neighbors \u2014 most especially, for children in need. <\/p>\n

In honor of Bishop Sullivan’s great legacy, proceeds from this year\u2019s 2019 Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan Memorial Golf Classic will benefit their Early Childhood Services. By providing early education and childcare for thousands of children, they\u2019re able to give so many families in Brooklyn and Queens a head start on life. <\/p>\n
