{"id":8641,"date":"2019-08-01T10:15:57","date_gmt":"2019-08-01T14:15:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=8641"},"modified":"2019-08-04T10:58:22","modified_gmt":"2019-08-04T14:58:22","slug":"johnson-urged-to-spend-no-deal-brexit-cash-saving-threatened-belfast-shipyard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=8641","title":{"rendered":"Johnson Urged to Spend No-Deal Brexit Cash Saving Threatened Belfast Shipyard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/032b6c55-d2e0-48c1-b425-f95e52c0800c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8642\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/032b6c55-d2e0-48c1-b425-f95e52c0800c.jpg 600w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/032b6c55-d2e0-48c1-b425-f95e52c0800c-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>The British Prime Minister has been challenged to spend a fraction of his no-deal Brexit fund saving a closure-threatened shipyard in Belfast.<\/p>\n<p>The UK&#8217;s Shadow Northern Ireland secretary Tony Lloyd told workers who have occupied the famous Harland and Wolff yard that the business must be nationalized if a new buyer cannot be found before administrators are due to move in on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Workers demonstrated at Stormont on Wednesday while Boris Johnson was meeting the region\u2019s political leaders, demanding that the Government step in to rescue the historic shipbuilder.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lloyd referenced the \u00a32.1bn (\u20ac2.3bn) Mr Johnson was spending preparing the UK for a no-deal Brexit as he addressed the 24\/7 picket at the front gates of the east Belfast yard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoris Johnson, who has just announced he will spend \u00a32bn (\u20ac2.1bn) on a no-deal Brexit that would be disastrous for Northern Ireland, let\u2019s see a little bit of that money put into this yard to guarantee not your future only, your community\u2019s future, this yard\u2019s future,\u201d said Mr Lloyd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s common sense to say to this Government if you are prepared to spend \u00a32bn on a potential no-deal Brexit, which would cost 40,000 jobs across Northern Ireland, spend a little bit of money investing in this yard, making sure there is a manufacturing future here in Belfast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harland and Wolff, a business synonymous with Belfast\u2019s industrial heyday, has been up for sale amid serious financial problems at its Norwegian parent company.<\/p>\n<p>The yard, which once employed thousands but currently has a workforce of around 130, has diversified away from ship building in the last two decades and now primarily works on wind energy and marine engineering projects.<\/p>\n<p>The UK Government has not intervened in the situation, insisting it is a commercial issue.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lloyd said if a private sector buyer could not be found then the Government must move to nationalize the business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour battle, your fight here today is right and it\u2019s just,\u201d he told the workers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis yard should be brought into public ownership to give it that guarantee of a future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An emergency meeting of Belfast City Council will be held on Friday to discuss the crisis at the yard.<\/p>\n<p>Harland and Wolff, whose two iconic yellow cranes Samson and Goliath dominate the Belfast skyline, is known around the world for being the birthplace of the ill-fated liner Titanic.<\/p>\n<p>The workers have maintained a demonstration at the gates of the shipyard since Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant General Secretary of the Unite union, Steve Turner, also addressed the workers on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He vowed that the occupation would continue until the yard\u2019s future is secure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s your solidarity \u2013 just as it\u2019s always the solidarity and unity expressed by working-class people \u2013 that will win this fight,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI pay tribute to you occupying this yard \u2013 we will not leave this yard, this will be a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week picket until such times as we have got a secure buyer for this yard and a secure future for the current workforce and all of those who hope to come here in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Turner said the future of shipbuilding could be secured if the Government committed to using UK shipyards to build Royal Navy vessels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur members are going to be here now until we get a buyer \u2013 a sustainable future for this yard,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course there is a sustainable future for this yard and the Government needs to take immediate action to stop this falling into liquidation on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we get breathing space I know there is a future for this yard. There are buyers in the pipeline that will pick up responsibility for this yard, including this workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Members of other trade unions joined the picketing workforce at Harland and Wolff on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>They have been providing support throughout the demonstration.
