The two world leaders spoke on the telephone on Friday evening and discussed the \u201cunparalleled\u201d trade opportunities offered by Britain\u2019s departure from the European Union.<\/p>\n
Mr Trump said any deal could signal a \u201cthree to four or five times\u201d increase in trade between the two countries.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re working already on a trade agreement,\u201d he told reporters at the White House. \u201cAnd I think it\u2019ll be a very substantial trade agreement.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know we can do with the UK, we can do three to four times, we were actually impeded by their relationship with the European Union. We were very much impeded on trade.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I think we can do three to four or five times what we\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t do the kind of trade we could do with what some people say is Great Britain.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd some people, remember a word you don\u2019t hear too much is the word England, which is a piece of it.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut with the UK we could do much, much more trade and we expect to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Downing Street said the two leaders had \u201cexpressed their commitment to delivering an ambitious free trade agreement\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey agreed that Brexit offers an unparalleled opportunity to strengthen the economic partnership between the UK and United States,\u201d a spokesman added.<\/p>\n
Mr Trump said the UK had \u201cneeded\u201d Mr Johnson for a long time, adding: \u201cHe has what it takes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI think we can have a great relationship and Boris is going to be a great prime minister,\u201d he said. \u201cI predict he will be a great prime minister.\u201d<\/p>\n
The president had previously heaped praise on Mr Johnson following his victory in the Tory leadership contest.<\/p>\n
Addressing a crowd of young US conservatives on Tuesday, he said: \u201cWe have a really good man who is going to be the prime minister of the UK now: Boris Johnson.<\/p>\n
\u201cGood man. He\u2019s tough and he\u2019s smart. They\u2019re saying \u2018Britain Trump\u2019. They call him Britain Trump and it\u2019s people saying that\u2019s a good thing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey like me over there. That\u2019s what they wanted. That\u2019s what they need.\u201d<\/p>\n
The leaders also used their Friday night call to discuss tensions with Iran.<\/p>\n
