{"id":8368,"date":"2019-07-12T12:12:36","date_gmt":"2019-07-12T16:12:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=8368"},"modified":"2019-07-14T11:14:19","modified_gmt":"2019-07-14T15:14:19","slug":"former-uk-attorney-general-warns-of-border-poll-if-britain-leaves-eu-with-no-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=8368","title":{"rendered":"Former UK Attorney General Warns of Border Poll if Britain Leaves EU with No Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/border.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"325\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/border.jpg 600w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/border-300x163.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Former UK attorney general Dominic Grieve has said the chances of an Irish border poll will \u201cgo up\u201d if Britain crashes out of the EU without a deal.<\/p>\n<p>The Conservative MP said the status of Northern Ireland would be \u201cthrown into jeopardy\u201d in the event of a no-deal scenario, and he is also worried about the union in terms of Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>He said the risk of violence post-Brexit if there is a no-deal withdrawal is also a concern.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Grieve made the comments ahead of a speech at the Institute of International and European Affairs in Dublin on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cA crash-out Brexit makes a political crisis in respect of Northern Ireland\u2019s future status more likely\u2026 clearly the chances of a border poll go up for a whole variety of reasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe status of Northern Ireland under the Good Friday Agreement remaining in the UK has worked because in truth there\u2019s been a clear majority of the population who have been very comfortable with the arrangements that the Good Friday Agreement has delivered, and that includes sections of the nationalist community as much as the unionist, and that will be thrown into jeopardy by a no-deal Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndeed Brexit itself is probably likely to put it under strain even if it is done in a controlled fashion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Grieve said potentially bringing about Irish unification through the mechanism of Brexit had always struck him as being \u201ca very bad idea\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether a no-deal Brexit raises the risk of violence in Northern Ireland, Mr Grieve said the prospect does concern him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt worries me because I think I know Northern Ireland well enough to know that acceptance of change, even if you have a minority status, doesn\u2019t always follow,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter all the whole history of the Troubles was of a series of perfectly clear grievances held by sections of the Northern Ireland community which meant that they wouldn\u2019t accept ordinary democratic processes in Northern Ireland because they felt that as a result, their status and way of life was under threat and they were also discriminated against and there were enough of them to create violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd in the exactly same way, in my view, the same exists within the loyalist community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Grieve said he would be \u201cvery surprised\u201d if Boris Johnson does not win the Conservative Party leadership race, and that he expects a \u201cperiod of major political crisis\u201d in the coming months \u2013 especially in the eight weeks in the lead-up to the October 31 Brexit deadline.<\/p>\n<p>He added he has no desire to see a general election because he is \u201cnot sure\u201d it would resolve anything in the current political climate.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he is in favor of a second referendum on EU withdrawal being held.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the only way out of the current crisis,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also accept that some people think that Boris Johnson will be able to negotiate a fresh deal and get that deal through Parliament.
