{"id":7876,"date":"2019-06-09T11:15:25","date_gmt":"2019-06-09T15:15:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=7876"},"modified":"2019-06-11T07:18:06","modified_gmt":"2019-06-11T11:18:06","slug":"families-bereaved-by-troubles-rally-for-truth-and-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=7876","title":{"rendered":"Families Bereaved by Troubles Rally For Truth and Justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/2.41766104.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7877\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/2.41766104.jpg 600w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/2.41766104-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Several thousand people, including campaign groups, took the streets of Belfast city center to call for action on dealing with the legacy of the past.<\/p>\n<p>In the second Time for Truth march, victims of the Troubles marched in three separate groups to Belfast City Hall carrying black flags, banners and pictures of their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>Families of those killed in the Loughinisland massacre, Ballymurphy massacre, Bloody Sunday and the Sean Graham bookmakers shop \u2013 as well as several other fatal incidents \u2013 took part in the rally.<\/p>\n<p>They have vowed to continue their campaign for truth.<\/p>\n<p>Several senior politicians from Sinn F\u00e9in, as well as the SLDP\u2019s Nichola Mallon, joined the march.<\/p>\n<p>Campaigners are calling for the implementation of legacy mechanisms in the Stormont House Agreement, funding to clear the backlog of legacy inquests, and the funding of the Police Ombudsman\u2019s Office to complete outstanding legacy investigations.<\/p>\n<p>Carmel Quinn\u2019s brother John Laverty was 20 years old when he shot on the Whiterock Road, Belfast on August 11, 1971.<\/p>\n<p>Ten civilians died following a series of shootings in what became known as the Ballymurphy massacre in west Belfast over August 9-11 1971.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh inquests are taking place into their deaths in Belfast.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Quinn said: \u201cAt the moment, we have an inquest that is ongoing and it is nearing completion, but there are families here who haven\u2019t had any kind of recognition or procedure to look into what happened their loves ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we are getting some kind of truth of what happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery family deserves a right to truth and an Article 2 inquest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a process there, it\u2019s called the Stormont House Agreement and the mechanisms are there and they need implemented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John Kelly, whose 17-year-old brother Michael was among those murdered in Blood Sunday in Derry, said the campaign for truth will continue into the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will achieve truth and justice for our people,\u201d he told the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Organizer Ciaran McAirt said the group does not believe in a hierarchy of victims.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThe Time for Truth campaign does not believe in the myth of blamelessness, all actors in the conflict have their parts to play to help the families in the pursuit of truth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to be very wary as the British State and its police force here have been consistent in their legacy for dealing with the past. They followed a simple three-prong strategy of denial, delay and death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paddy Murray, solicitor for the Ballymurphy families, addressed the crowd: \u201cThis has been a difficult time for campaigners and families who have had inquests delayed and we\u2019ve an Ombudsman Office which has been under-resourced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had many families who have yet to have independent investigations into the deaths of their loved ones yet we\u2019ve had Tory MPs and the DUP bending over backwards to legislate to protect soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf one section of society has access to the justice system, that\u2019s not real justice, that\u2019s privilege and it\u2019s imperative that we all stick together until all of the families have justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sinn F\u00e9in vice president Michelle O\u2019Neill claimed the families have been denied access to justice.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cWe have joined thousands of families who have come along for the march.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have come together to say that it\u2019s time for truth.
