{"id":7435,"date":"2019-05-19T08:17:23","date_gmt":"2019-05-19T12:17:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=7435"},"modified":"2019-05-19T08:17:23","modified_gmt":"2019-05-19T12:17:23","slug":"speaking-in-fermanagh-barclay-blames-labour-for-breakdown-in-brexit-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=7435","title":{"rendered":"Speaking in Fermanagh, Barclay Blames Labour for Breakdown in Brexit Talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2.42934746.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2.42934746.jpg 600w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2.42934746-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay said a no-deal scenario could be \u201cmitigated\u201d and was preferable to giving up on the process of leaving the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Barclay stressed that he was committed to getting Theresa May\u2019s deal and the Withdrawal Agreement Bill through Parliament as the best way to deliver Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>But if as the clock ticked down to October 31 the UK was faced with the choice of a no-deal Brexit or revoking Article 50 and staying in, Mr Barclay said the negative effects of leaving without an agreement could be limited.<\/p>\n<p>The Brexit Secretary pinned the blame on Labour for the collapse of cross-party talks aimed at finding a consensus at Westminster.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThe division in the Labour Party over the second referendum, I think that\u2019s why they\u2019ve not been able to move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Barclay has said that if the Withdrawal Agreement Bill is defeated, the deal thrashed out with the EU would be \u201cdead\u201d and the UK would be left with the options of no deal or no Brexit on October 31.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during a visit to a cement works on the border with Ireland in Derrylin, Co Fermanagh, Mr Barclay acknowledged the disruption a no-deal scenario would cause but it was better than cancelling Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think both options are undesirable but I think on no-deal we would have to do all we can to mitigate the disruption \u2013 there would be disruption and I have always been quite candid about that, which is why I think a deal is what we should be backing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But revoking Article 50 and \u201cthe biggest vote in our history\u201d would cause damage to democracy, while another referendum would mean a further year of uncertainty for business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe damage if we were to go back on our vote would be huge,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The failure to reach a deal with Labour means the Withdrawal Agreement Bill faces a tough task getting through the Commons.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Barclay questioned whether Labour ever intended to reach an agreement given the public statements made by shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer and shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry about a second referendum on any deal.<\/p>\n<p>He insisted the Government had been prepared to compromise during the negotiation process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is clear, and even some of the Labour negotiating team has said, that the Government has moved,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been movement on things such as the phase two negotiating objectives and the role of Parliament.
