{"id":7330,"date":"2019-05-10T13:21:34","date_gmt":"2019-05-10T17:21:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=7330"},"modified":"2019-05-11T10:23:54","modified_gmt":"2019-05-11T14:23:54","slug":"rare-irish-proclamation-sold-for-over-16000-in-cavan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=7330","title":{"rendered":"Rare Irish Proclamation Sold for Over $16,000 in Cavan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2.42364035.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2.42364035.jpg 600w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2.42364035-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>A rare Irish Proclamation has sold for over $16,000 at auction.<\/p>\n<p>It was printed on the first anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising when rebels staged a major revolt against British rule in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>The Proclamation went under the hammer at Victor Mee Auctions in Co Cavan on Wednesday with an estimate of between \u20ac10,000 and \u20ac20,000 .<br \/>\nThe auction house said it was sold to a private client in Northern Ireland for \u20ac14,500.<\/p>\n<p>There are just three 1917 Proclamations known to still be in existence.<\/p>\n<p>In 1917, the Proclamation was removed by a member of the Dublin Metropolitan Police at Butt Bridge in central Dublin on orders of the High Sheriff to avoid political unrest.<\/p>\n<p>He later gave it to Robert Bradley, a retired sheriff.<\/p>\n<p>It was passed on to the McKay family who safely kept the piece for over six decades, passing it down to the current owner.<\/p>\n<p>The seller, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: \u201cThe Proclamation was given by the sheriff to my father with the words \u2018look after this, it will be important some day\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father kept it safely over six decades until finally it became my responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The seller\u2019s father almost parted with this rare piece of history in the 1960s, when an American businessman placed an advertisement in the local paper looking for Proclamations.<\/p>\n<p>However the copy had been so safely stowed on the top of a wardrobe that it could not be located at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The 1917 Proclamations were printed by Cumann na mBan with the printing blocks used for the original version after they were gathered from the wreckage of the GPO.<\/p>\n<p>The Irish Connections Collectors auction also included the sale of an original 19th century Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) station plaque, which was taken down originally from a police station in Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>It was expected to sell for between \u20ac400 and \u20ac600.
