\"\"It was my pleasure to catch up with Adi Roach<\/strong> of Chernobyl Children International<\/strong> at the Fitzpatrick Hotel<\/strong> on Lexington Avenue last Monday before she returned to Ireland that evening. What an amazing person she is and would you believe it, she is from Cork too.<\/p>\n

I am just blown away by this woman with her energy and how she presented herself all of it after she just given a presentation at the United Nations<\/strong> for the whole world to see.<\/p>\n

I did not interview her but one of our editors has done that as you can see on the website and the digital newspaper. You can read for yourself the full interview by Brad Balfour<\/strong> that I hope you will like. <\/p>\n

The Celtic Cruise<\/strong> will be held on Wednesday, June 12 in aid of the Emerald Isle Immigration Center<\/strong>. The NY Rose of Tralee<\/strong> is calling for all potential NY Cork Roses. 2019 marks the 60th Anniversary of the Rose of Tralee Festival<\/strong> and NY Rose Center<\/strong>. Eligibility requirements are as follows: be 18 years of age by January 1, 2019 and will not have reached your 29th birthday on or prior to September 1, 2019; be unmarried or never have been married; born in Ireland or an Irish citizen or of Irish origin by virtue of one of your ancestors having been born in Ireland, and be a resident of the Tri-State area. I have to say congratulations to Eileen O\u2019Hea<\/strong> and Herb Griffin<\/strong> who exchanged wedding vows on Saturday, April 27. May the years ahead be filled with lasting joy. Eileen has been the Cork Association<\/strong> corresponding sectary for a number of years though now that is in the hands of Mary Hurley<\/strong>, who I am sure will also do a great job getting information out there.<\/p>\n

Kildare. Well what can I say? Only that I was at the Kildare Association of New York\u2019s Annual Dinner Dance<\/strong> that was held last Saturday at Fairways at Dunwoodie<\/strong> (1 Wasylenko Lane in Yonkers).<\/p>\n

The honoree was none other than Siobhan Dennehy, Executive Director of the Emerald Isle Immigration Center<\/strong>. I was a guest of Garett Doyle<\/strong> the proprietor of Tuttles Bar and Grill<\/strong> on Second Avenue and what a fabulous party it was and, with the music by Guss Hayes<\/strong> how could it not be as he had the place rocking. <\/p>\n

Now talking about parties, at Tuttles the next day it was Martin Dunne<\/strong> having his 80th birthday party and the who\u2019s who of the Irish community attended. As always if I had to mention them all it would take up the whole column, so I will just mention a few: Martin had his partner Eileen and also his family. Hilary Bierne<\/strong>, from the New York Saint Patrick\u2019s Day Parade<\/strong> and Michael Prunty<\/strong> and their wives, Shela Lynett<\/strong> and her husband Colm Hourican<\/strong>, Pauline Turley<\/strong> of The Irish Arts Center<\/strong> and lots more attended. The sing song was a classic and you had some talent there. It was fabulous and went on for a few hours. <\/p>\n

On Monday I visited the Cardinal\u2019s residence on Madison Avenue and it was a pleasure to meet with his excellence Cardinal Tim Dolan<\/strong> who I might tell you was just a great host. The Cardinal was there to welcome the Benedictine Community of Kylemore Abbey<\/strong> from County Galway and Sr Magdalena<\/strong> who traveled from Ireland to attend the reception. It was a very special celebration of the Monastery\u2019s campaign which, with your help is currently just $24,000 from reaching their $500,000 goal.<\/p>\n

They hoped to reach the goal by the evening of April 29 and let me tell you that they did and again thanks to all the fundraising by Mary Reed<\/strong>. She also organized Joannie Madden<\/strong> and Cherish the Ladies<\/strong> to perform. <\/p>\n

I must not forget that the Consul General of Ireland Ciaran Madden<\/strong> also was on hand to welcome everyone who was there for the occasion. <\/p>\n

The Irish Repertory Theatre<\/strong> (132 W 22nd St) is presenting The Plough and the Stars<\/strong>, directed by Charlotte Moore<\/strong>, that is part of the O\u2019Casey Cycle<\/strong> that will be performed in the Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage<\/strong> until June 22. <\/p>\n

The O\u2019Casey Cycle is part of The Sean O\u2019Casey Season, a comprehensive retrospective of the work of renowned Irish playwright Sean O\u2019Casey<\/strong>, to take place from January through June of Irish Rep\u2019s 30th Anniversary Season. Pretty young newlywed Nora Clitheroe is the talk of her tenement as she tirelessly works to lift her family out of their impoverished circumstances. <\/p>\n

She tries to keep her husband Jack from the revolutionary fervor sweeping through Dublin. But Jack becomes a Commandant in the Irish Citizen Army, and when the Easter Rising of 1916 begins, he leaves a pregnant Nora to help lead the fight. <\/p>\n

The disparate, quarrelsome tenement residents are forced to shelter together as urban warfare makes their home nearly as treacherous as the streets. Passions and ideals rise and converge, but in the end, loss and devastation triumph over the promise of a new Ireland. <\/p>\n
