A bunch of flowers left outside the city\u2019s landmark civic building, the 19th century Guildhall, said \u201cnever in my name\u201d.<\/p>\n
Northern Ireland Secretary Karen Bradley was among the first to sign a book of condolence inside the Guildhall this morning.<\/p>\n
She wrote: \u201cA tragic loss, such promise, such energy, so much potential.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can only imagine what you would have achieved.\u201d<\/p>\n
A pro-dissident republican slogan written on a wall near the site of the killing was altered to read \u201cIRA are done\u201d and branded it a \u201cdefeated army\u201d.<\/p>\n

Vigils attended by thousands have been held at the scene of the killing in the Creggan estate and in the city center.<\/p>\n
A floral tribute at the scene left by Ms McKee\u2019s partner Sara read: \u201cMy beautiful Lyra, our time together was too short, and your light was snuffed out too soon.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love you forever, your Sara xxx.\u201d<\/p>\n
Local resident John McGonagle signed the book of condolence.<\/p>\n
He had been a city center business owner during the decades of conflict when violent deaths were commonplace.<\/p>\n
Mr McGonagle said: \u201cI am revolted by the whole thing. It is a retrograde step.<\/p>\n
\u201cDerry is one of the most wonderful cities in the world.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt does not need it or deserve it and Lyra did not deserve to die, it is as simple as that.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cThere has just been a quiet anger. I normally would not do this sort of thing but in this case it merits it really.\u201d<\/p>\n
Civic, church, political and community leaders in the city have supported the communities\u2019 \u201coverwhelming\u201d demand for an end to all violence, a joint statement said.<\/p>\n
Anyone in need of immediate support following the traumatic killing and general disorder, which was widely shared on social media, was urged to contact healthcare professionals.<\/p>\n
A heart-shaped tribute at the scene also read \u201cnot in our name\u201d and was simply signed by the people of Derry.<\/p>\n
Derry was scarred by the Troubles.<\/p>\n
The violent conflict started there, with pitched battles between youths and police in the Bogside estate; the cradle of Martin McGuinness\u2019 rise to prominence.<\/p>\n
Mr McGuinness converted from senior IRA commander to peacemaker and eventually deputy first minister in Stormont\u2019s power sharing administration alongside his former arch-enemy the Rev Ian Paisley.<\/p>\n
That change in attitude was mirrored by the community in places like Creggan, local residents have repeatedly said.<\/p>\n
A vigil held at the scene on Friday afternoon condemning the killers of Lyra McKee attested to that.<\/p>\n
Ms McKee died from a bullet fired indiscriminately but intended to hit police officers during Thursday\u2019s riots.<\/p>\n
Stormont power sharing is suspended and independent reports have expressed concern about renewed barriers to community policing in some nationalist parts of Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n
Recently, a planned event in Derry involving young people opposed to stop and search powers exercised by police was called off.<\/p>\n
PSNI chief constable George Hamilton said the intention was for officers to have difficult conversations but demonstrators against their involvement forced its cancellation.<\/p>\n
