{"id":5073,"date":"2019-01-15T13:49:05","date_gmt":"2019-01-15T18:49:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=5073"},"modified":"2019-01-15T09:50:19","modified_gmt":"2019-01-15T14:50:19","slug":"taoiseach-still-hopeful-on-brexit-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=5073","title":{"rendered":"Taoiseach Still Hopeful on Brexit Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/bc7cabe3-716a-475d-9b08-8df37a4f6c76.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5074\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/bc7cabe3-716a-475d-9b08-8df37a4f6c76.jpg 600w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/bc7cabe3-716a-475d-9b08-8df37a4f6c76-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Leo Varadkar has said that he still hopeful for a deal on the UK\u2019s withdrawal from the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Commentators said on Monday that the British Prime Minister\u2019s Withdrawal Agreement looked likely to fail in the House of Commons vote on Tuesday, but the Taoiseach refused to comment on what he thought should happen next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s important that we allow the British political system the time to make that decision,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope the vote will be in favor, that the Withdrawal Agreement will be ratified by Westminster and we can get straight into talks on the future relationship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a matter for them and out of respect for their democratic institutions we should allow them to have their vote tomorrow and we\u2019ll reassess.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it would be in Ireland\u2019s interest for me to be interfering in their internal politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Varadkar added he had \u201cno desire to threaten the union\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Varadkar added that although he remained optimistic, his government is making preparations for a No-Deal Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll have further preparations at cabinet tomorrow for no-deal Brexit, I still think a no-deal Brexit is unlikely, but we need to be prepared for it nonetheless,\u201d Mr Varadkar said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI shouldn\u2019t pretend to anyone that any country can be fully prepared for Brexit, there is no good Brexit and a no-deal Brexit will have a very significant impact on Ireland, Britain and Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be prepared, but I\u2019m not going to say to you that everything is going to be fine, of course there will be interruptions and negative impact but we\u2019ll be as prepared as we possibly can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A letter containing assurances from the presidents of the European Council and European Commission was published ahead of Theresa May\u2019s statement to the Commons on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs May said the letter contained \u201cvaluable new clarifications and assurances to put before the House of Commons, including on getting our future relationship in place rapidly so the backstop should never need to be used\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cWe now have a commitment from the EU that work on our new relationship can begin as soon as possible after the signing of the Withdrawal Agreement in advance of March 29, and we have an explicit commitment that this new relationship does not need to replicate the backstop in any respect whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>T\u00e1naiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said he hoped the letter from the EU would provide reassurance and clarity to MPs in Parliament as they prepare for Tuesday\u2019s Commons vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople shouldn\u2019t feel threatened by it (the backstop), some people have painted the backstop into something that it\u2019s not,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis week is going to be a really significant few days. This is a time where Ireland has to hold its nerve.
