Five of the six candidates vying for the highest office in the land participated in a special Tonight Show election program on Virgin Media One.<\/p>\n
Co-hosts Ivan Yates and Matt Cooper dismissed the campaign as \u201cbland and boring\u201d, to which Senator Joan Freeman replied: \u201cI agree.\u201d<\/p>\n
The candidates \u2013 Ms Freeman, Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada and businessmen Sean Gallagher, Peter Casey and Gavin Duffy \u2013 were grilled for more than an hour.<\/p>\n
President Michael D Higgins declined to take part.<\/p>\n
Mr Duffy said it was ironic that the candidates were being asked whether they were wasting their time given Mr Higgins\u2019s absence.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m certainly not wasting my time turning up here,\u201d Mr Duffy said. \u201cI think people do want a change.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Casey hit the headlines last week over controversial comments he made about the Traveler community, but when asked whether he had dragged the campaign into the gutter, he said he had only \u201cpointed out divides\u201d that already exist.<\/p>\n
He faced calls to withdraw from the race after he said Travelers were simply people camping on someone else\u2019s land and that recognition of them as members of an ethnic minority was a \u201cload of nonsense\u201d.<\/p>\n
He said during tonight’s debate that the role of president is to be a voice for the people who need to be heard.<\/p>\n
\u201cMiddle Ireland needs to be heard,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mr Cooper accused Mr Casey of pulling a \u201cstunt\u201d when he announced last weekend that he was taking time to consider whether to continue to run for the presidency.<\/p>\n
The debate was the last chance for the public to see the candidates questioned before polling day on Friday.<\/p>\n
Mr Higgins is favourite to retain the presidency.<\/p>\n
