I went Out&About to the Irish Repertory Theatre<\/strong> last Wednesday afternoon to view Brian Friel\u2019s Molly Sweeney with our Arts and Entertainment editor Brad Balfour<\/strong>. Brian Friel<\/strong> is widely regarded as one of Ireland\u2019s greatest dramatists as he has written over 30 plays across six decades. It was majestic as the cast of actors were absolutely brilliant performing their parts in the play set in Ballybeg, County Donegal. The roles were played by Rufus Collins<\/strong>, John Keating<\/strong> and Sarah Street<\/strong>, all total professionals I might tell yea, and I\u2019m telling you now to go and see this production of Molly Sweeney as I am sure you\u2019re going to love it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All aboard on Wednesday June 12th! Yes, it\u2019s here, the biggest Irish event of the year, when Celtic Charity Inc.<\/strong> and AOH Div. 7, New York County<\/strong> present the Celtic Cruise<\/strong>. I can attest to it as I have been on many of them and let me tell yea that is is what you would call a great Irish Hooley. It is always an evening to remember because it is so enjoyable and you have the best of food, drinks and music to keep that party atmosphere going all night long. Now that I\u2019ve given you the information on the Celtic Cruise itself, here I am going to give you a little history on the Celtic Cruise, so here we go. In 1992 during the troubles in Ireland, Kruise for Kids<\/strong> was founded by Dermot Kelly<\/strong> and AOH Division 7 in support of\u00a0Project Children<\/strong>. Project Children was founded by Dennis Mulcahy<\/strong>, who was nominated for two consecutive years for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for all his work for the children of Northern Ireland and was runner-up to Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His efforts helped lead President Clinton to start the peace commission that led to the Good Friday Peace Agreement in Northern Ireland. The success of Project Children led to it becoming fully funded by the US, Irish and British governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kruise for Kids had accomplished its purpose. In 2011 the event became the Celtic Cruise under the guidance of Chairman John Tully<\/strong>, and Co-Chair Sean Claffey<\/strong> of\u00a0 AOH Division 7, and a new charity was selected, the\u00a0Emerald Isle Immigration Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Emerald Isle Immigration Center\u00a0(EIIC) had grown out of the Irish Immigration Reform Movement. EIIC is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides legal support and social services for immigrants of over 100 nationalities. The EIIC led by Siobhan Dennehy<\/strong> has helped tens of thousands of New Yorkers become productive US citizens and has protected the vulnerable from fraud and abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EIIC provides its services bilingually (English\/Spanish) and in other languages as well, assisting clients in seeking the American Dream. They also run educational, job placement, anti-hunger, and seniors programs throughout New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have another brilliant event that should always be supported as well and that is the Gaelic Athletic Association of Greater New York\u2019s 90th Annual Banquet<\/strong>, which will take place on Friday 14 June 2024 at Westchester Manor<\/strong>. Cocktails will be served from 7 pm with dinner and dancing from 8 pm to 12 am with the Guest of Honor being Mike Hynes<\/strong>. This year\u2019s Lifetime Achievement\u00a0Award Recipients are John Kelly<\/strong> and Tom Nugent<\/strong> and the GAA Community Spirit Awardee is Tracy Ely Dwyer<\/strong>. Music will be provided by Mary G<\/strong> and Frankie Lee<\/strong> and tickets are $125. This announcement from the County\u2008Cork Association came to me on the passing of Denis O\u2019Connor<\/strong>, a well-known businessman in the Irish community and the travel and tourism agency business to Ireland, RIP. The note said: \u201cwe are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our esteemed 60-year member, Denis O\u2019Connor, on May 2, 2024. \u00a0Denis was the youngest of five brothers born and raised in Doonasheen, Kiskeam, Co. Cork. In 1959 Denis traveled to NY to attend his brother\u2019s wedding and decided to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe began his career at New York Life Insurance and subsequently worked for Healy O\u2019Sullivan Travel until his retirement. He was a loyal and proud member of the Co. Cork Association and was honored on March 2, 2024 for his sixty years of service to the Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDenis was an avid sports fan, supporting the NY Rangers and of course his Rebel Cork Gaelic games. He enjoyed attending the games at Gaelic Park each Sunday during the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was an active and devoted parishioner of St. John the Baptist Parish in Yonkers. He was a great historian and ancestry tracer. He was affectionately known as \u201cUncle Den\u201d to his family and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVisitation will be on \u00a0Wednesday, May 29, from 3 pm to 8 pm at Hodder\u2019s Funeral Home (899 McLean Avenue in Yonkers) with the Funeral Mass to be held on Thursday, May 30 at 11 am at Sacred Heart Church in Dobbs Ferry. The Co. Cork Association will assemble at 7 pm to pay their respects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
