As they say, it\u2019s just around the corner, just walking distance to this great Irish establishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I was meeting my Editor Grahame, if you like to call it a meeting, to discuss the latest issue of <em>The Irish Examiner USA<\/em>\u2008and how it turned out for you, our readers. Yes. we did have a libation, we were again so happy with another great issue under our belts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I did get a call from a <strong>Dermot Kelly<\/strong>, to tell me he will come and meet me there and he will have some very good friends with him. That he did, as who came in was <strong>Catherine Flood<\/strong> of <strong>Catherine Flood Recruitment Consultants<\/strong> and <strong>Linda Croston<\/strong> of <strong>Savvy Consulting Inc. <\/strong>and as you can imagine I was very happy to meet them all. All three of them do unbelievable work behind the scenes for charity with no fuss at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I nearly forgot to mention that the bartender at Malone\u2019s Irish Bar and Grill is none other than <strong>Eoin Stack<\/strong>, ah yes, a Tipperary man I might tell yea, and what a great host he is to work for the owner of this fine establishment, <strong>Peter O\u2019Connell<\/strong> who is also the owner of <strong>Molly\u2019s Pub and Restaurant Shebeen<\/strong> (287 Third Avenue). Peter was relaxing at home after a minor operation on his knee and recovering very well too I\u2019m told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that I got that off my mind here is something that I have to tell you about, and again, I just have to give it to <strong>George Heslin<\/strong> as he never stops creating events especially for <strong>The New York Irish Center<\/strong>. When George took over from <strong>Paul Finnigan<\/strong> who is now President of the <strong>Irish Business Organization of New York<\/strong> he had big shoes to fill and yes, he did and is a total professional at what he does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The New York Irish Center, a hub for culture and community enrichment serving diverse constituencies in Long Island City, marks Ireland\u2019s newest national holiday, <strong>St Brigid\u2019s Day<\/strong>, with a special cocktail reception with entertainment honoring and celebrating prominent and influential New Yorkers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWomen of Ireland \u2013 A New York Celebration\u201d<\/strong> takes place at the\u00a0New York Irish Center (1040 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City) on\u00a0Thursday February 1, at 6:30 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The evening\u2019s emcee will be the reigning <strong>Rose of Tralee,\u00a0R\u00f3is\u00edn Wiley<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0The Westchester native was the New York Rose before being selected last August to represent Ireland in its high-profile, international festival for young women of Irish descent from Ireland and around the world.\u00a0\u00a0The event was televised on two nights by RTE from the Rose Dome in County Kerry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leading a brief panel talk with special guests will be <strong>Irish Consul General\u00a0Helena Nolan<\/strong>. Her panel guests will be\u00a0Invest <strong>Northern Ireland\u2019s Executive Vice-President\u00a0Andrea Haughian<\/strong>; <strong>New York City Council Member\u00a0Julie Won<\/strong>, and the author\u00a0<strong>Yvonne Cassidy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three distinguished New Yorkers will <strong>receive special recognitions \u2013 American Express Global Business Travel Planner\u00a0Corina Galvin<\/strong>\u00a0(Women of Ireland Community Leadership Award);\u00a0<strong>Sinead Naughton<\/strong>\u00a0who owns and operates a number of hospitality establishments (Women of Ireland Business Leadership Award) and the comedian, actor, writer and music producer\u00a0<strong>Fiona Walsh<\/strong>\u00a0on whom will be bestowed the Women of Ireland Cultural Leadership Award.\u00a0\u00a0These are the first recipients of these awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After receiving her award, Walsh will segue into spinning discs for a little extra revelry to cap the evening. Event sponsorship is courtesy of\u00a0<strong>Tourism Ireland<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Lash Star Beauty<\/strong>. \u201cWomen of Ireland\u201d hosted by the NY Irish Center is a by-invitation free event. The Center programs a wide variety of cultural events spanning film, theater, comedy, books and traditional and contemporary music.\u00a0\u00a0NYIC\u2019s social support programs include classes, networking and outreach for LGBTQ+ individuals, seniors and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it was founded in 2004 by the late <strong>Father Colm Campbell<\/strong> and <strong>Paddy Reilly<\/strong>, NYIC was primarily an Irish immigrant service organization and community center.\u00a0Now it produces close to 100 events a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among its community enrichment programs are its\u00a0Wednesday Lunch Club\u00a0&#8211; one of the most popular active retirement gatherings in New York City &#8211; and\u00a0\u201cThe Story Continues\u201d\u00a0&#8211; NYIC\u2019s quarterly LGBTQ+ networking event, featuring prominent voices from the community and a safe space for conversation and advocacy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NYIC also houses\u00a0<strong>Solace House<\/strong>, a provider of free, confidential suicide prevention counseling for one-on-one, group or family mental health support. Higgins<\/strong> presented our <strong>Executive Director Aidan Connolly<\/strong> and <strong>Vice Chair Pauline Turley<\/strong> with the Presidential Distinguished Service Award at \u00c1ras an Uachtar\u00e1in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAidan and Pauline were honored for their role in developing the new Irish Arts Center, \u2018one of New York\u2019s most dynamic multidisciplinary arts institutions and a world-class flagship home for the global Irish diaspora.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know that everything we do is only possible thanks to you\u2014our incredible artistic community, and our loyal audience and supporters. This came to me from the <strong>President of the Cork Association, Tom Browne<\/strong>: \u201cWe are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our esteemed forty-seven-year member and 2013 Corkman of the Year &#8211; Timothy \u2018Tim\u2019 Joseph Hegarty. Tim passed away peacefully on Friday, January 19, 2024 after a long illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTim was a native of Dungourney, Co. Cork. Many of our members will remember Tim as a partner with the late Denis Forde in the Cork Lounge.\u00a0He was a familiar figure at all our Cork meetings and all Cork events until his failing health prevented him from doing so .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We extend our condolences to his wife Maureen and his five children, Mary, Elizabeth, Valerie, Timothea and Timothy, his thirteen grandchildren and his siblings, Sheila Fildes, Sean Hegarty, Kathleen Finn and Billy Hegarty and to the extended Hegarty family in the US and Ireland. May Tim rest in heavenly peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funeral Arrangements: Visiting hours: 3 pm to 8 pm on Thursday, January 25 at <strong>Yorktown Funeral Home<\/strong> (945 East Main Street, Shrub Oak, NY).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please Join the Co.
