Now I’ve told you so and let me tell you, this an event well worth supporting.

I just heard the sad news this morning that Brian O’Donovan died last night. He had a peaceful death at home surrounded by his family. He had been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor last year.

Our condolences go out to his wife, Lindsay, and his children, Aoife, Ciarán, Aidan, and Nuala as well as his brothers and sisters in Ireland.

Brian’s radio show, A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH Boston, was the most popular folk music program in New England and beyond. With his Christmas Celtic Concert Series, St. Patrick’s Day concerts, and the Back Room at the Burren series, he brought the top tier of Celtic musicians to audiences in the Boston area.

His deep love and knowledge of the music, both traditional and contemporary, was evident in all his presentations.
His Christmas Celtic concert series quickly became a holiday institution in the Boston Area. Renowned for the high standard of musical guests, it also featured his wife, Lindsay and often his daughters, Aoife and Nuala, all excellent singers and musicians.

Brian’s loss as a radio presenter and impresario is incalculable. His energy and enthusiasm are irreplaceable. His friendship will be sorely missed by all who knew him, especially the musicians.

I knew Brian very well as we met and spoke to him on a lot of occasions and we both come from Cork, RIP.

I hope you enjoyed this week’s Out&About and I’ll see you all again next week.

Share this:

Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)

Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)

Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)

Click to print (Opens in new window)

By Paddy McCarthy Well, well, well, what a week, but I’m not complaining as it was a good one for me as I was Out&About.
