Tom Moran, RIP (Queens University Belfast)<\/figcaption><\/figure>It is with great sadness that I start this column on the passing of one of the nicest gentlemen that I have ever known, and that is Tom Moran. <\/p>\n

What can be said about this man that has not been said before? Only there will never be anyone like him again and he will be sorely missed in the Irish community for his contributions and his charity as he was always giving. <\/p>\n

He did so much for the peace proses in Ireland along with the great Bill Flynn and they were the leaders of Mutual of America leading it to become a super insurance company. Tom worked very hard behind the scenes with his colleges to make it happen and it worked; what a man and what a team! <\/p>\n

Tom had a smile and a laugh that made a room brighter and more comfortable.\u2008His greetings when you approached him were so warm and friendly. We here at The Irish Examiner would like to send our condolences to his wife Joan and family. May Tom rest in peace. <\/p>\n

Come join the fun at the Nassau AOH Irish Festival and Feis on Sunday, September 16, at Nickerson Beach, on the south shore of Nassau County, NY. <\/p>\n

Delight in the dancing, thrill to the marching bagpipes and drum bands, watch the step dancing and pipe band competitions, enjoy traditional Irish singing and shop at plenty of Irish vendors.<\/p>\n

There will be games for the kids, Irish art on display, a Gaelic Cul Camp, and even an opportunity to brush up on your Irish language skills! Food and beverages will also be available. <\/p>\n

Come celebrate all that\u2019s best of Irish heritage and culture at this 46th annual Feis and Irish Festival, put on by the Nassau County Board of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in America. <\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Hibernian Festival honors Nassau AOH Division 7\u2019s Richard O\u2019Neill for his great service to the Order. The festival will be held from 9 am to 6 pm at Nickerson Beach (880 Lido Blvd., Lido Beach). $10 per person; no charge for children under 16. A Catholic Mass will be held on site at 11 am. The Pond Theatre Company are putting on a show called The Naturalists, written by playwright Jaki McCarrick that seems destined for Broadway with an all Irish cast.<\/p>\n

Playwright Jaki McCarrick<\/figcaption><\/figure>Jaki McCarrick is an award-winning writer of plays, poetry and fiction. She won the 2010 Papatango New Writing Prize for her play \u2018Leopoldville\u2019, and her play \u2018Belfast\u2008Girls,\u2019 developed at the National Theatre London, was shortlisted for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and the 2014 BBC Tony Doyle Award. \u2018Belfast\u2008Girls\u2019 premiered in Chicago in May 2015 to much critical acclaim (Windy City Times Critics\u2019 Pick) and opened this spring in Vancouver.In 2015, her plays \u2018Belfast\u2008Girls,\u2019 \u2018Leopoldville,\u2019 and \u2018The Mushroom\u2008Pickers\u2019 (staged at the Southwark Playhouse in 2006 to several 4 Star reviews), were published by Samuel French. <\/p>\n

Her play \u2018Bohemians\u2019 was read at RADA on January 18 2017, starring Imogen Stubbs and Rob Jarvis, directed by Tilly Vosburgh. In 2016 Jaki was shortlisted for the St. John\u2019s College, Cambridge\u2019s Harper-Wood Studentship for her short play \u2018Tussy\u2019 about Eleanor Marx, a piece she is currently developing.<\/p>\n

Jaki also won the 2010 Wasafiri prize for short fiction and followed this with the publication of her debut story collection, \u2018The Scattering,\u2019 published by Seren Books. The book was shortlisted for the 2014 Edge Hill Prize. Winner of the inaugural John Lennon Poetry Competition, she has also had numerous poems published in literary journals including Ambit, Poetry Ireland Review, Irish Pages, Blackbox Manifold etc.<\/p>\n

Recently longlisted for the inaugural Irish Fiction Laureate, Jaki is currently editing her first novel and a second collection of short stories called \u2018Night of the Frogs.\u2019 Screenplay projects also include adaptations of her short story \u2018Hellebores\u2019 and her first play, \u2018The Mushroom Pickers.\u2019<\/p>\n

She has held numerous residencies including Writer-in-Residence at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris & also regularly writes arts pieces for the Times Literary Supplement (TLS), The Irish Examiner and other publications. <\/p>\n

The show will run from September 7 to 23 at Walkerspace (46 Walker Street, New York). Tickets are $45. Don\u2019t wait and miss this incredible cast featuring Michael Mellamphy, Tim Ruddy, Sarah Street and John Keating. Just by looking at the playwright and the actors that I have mentioned how can it not be a huge hit as they are all professionals and believe me I have seen them in action, wow!<\/p>\n
