I traveled in the new LIRR train from Huntington station into Grand Central Station on Thursday afternoon for the first time and was just fabulous. The new extended terminal in Grand Central is beautiful with a little bit of walking and then the escalator upstairs to 42nd Street, but it’s well worth it if you are working or visiting the east side of New York City.

I have to admit it as I have been moaning and groaning about all the construction that was and is going on in Penn Station and the new tracks leading into Grand Central station from Long Island for a while now. It’s all happening now though, and not because of me but the workers who’ve done unbelievable work on both stations and lot of them are Irish and Irish Americans who are the best in the world. Now there are a mix of a lot of different nationalities that are working on both projects along with Irish and Irish Americans, so I thank all of them myself for the wonderful work they all have done.

For my social life I then stopped in at Pershing Square, owned by Buzzy O’Keeffe just across from Grand Central Station for a pint like the old days when I got off the train. I then visited McCarthy’s Irish Bar on 46th Street just off Times Square to meet a few friends and have a cocktail or two.

After I visited those two establishments, I headed to Penn Station to get my train and I stopped at The Bar in Moynihan Hall in Penn Station as I was bit early and had a chat with the staff before I got on the train as it is a great place, with Operations Manager Anthony Malone, how could it go wrong?

Now, as you can see it’s all pre Saint Patrick’s Day and no I am not getting ready for a sober day how can I as I will have so much going on that week. I was at the County Cork BP&P Association’s 138th St. Patrick’s Banquet last Saturday at Antun’s in Queens Village. What a great evening it was and it’s always one of my favorite events, well what do you expect I’m from Cork.

The best thing about all the County dinners is you get to meet people you have not seen for a very long time as we all live in different directions and some are very far away as well. If I had to mention everyone, I got to meet I would fill the paper with all their names, though I will name a few and some of them had come over from County Cork to celebrate the honorees and to celebrate the evening with all the guests. As I said there are lots of people I would like to mention and the volunteers the help to make it a success like the woman herself Mae O’Driscoll who covers all what goes on to make it a perfect night for everybody.

The honorees were Jim O’Neill, Cork Man of the Year, Michelle McCarthy, Cork Woman of the Year and Thomas Murphy, Frank T. Carvill, Distinguished Service Award. I also met the new Cork Association President Thomas Browne who will be a great leader of the association along with Martina O’Dowd, the dinner dance Chairperson who also worked very hard to make the evening a great success.

Ann Doherty, Cork City Council Director of Services, Corporate Affairs and International Relations Councilor Seamus McGrath and Cork County Council Director of Services Planning and Infrastructure, Michael Lynch also came over from Cork.

Alright that’s enough about Cork, what can I say I’m from there, but I love every county in Ireland as I have been in most of them and they know that too.

I had a couple of friends of from Cork to come to the dinner that I hadn’t met for a very long time and from my neighborhood in Cork was Ray O’Shea and his lovely wife Patricia with Gerry Halloran and his girlfriend Debbie McCarthy, whose mother was a neighbor of my back in Ballyphehane in Cork. That was again just a fabulous get-together for the evening.

I have to let you know about this man Patrick Murphy who is very interesting and maybe if you do have some health problems it might be worth to go and see him when he visits the USA: “In-demand Irish herbalist is coming to Boston! Did I have, a good time? Boy oh boy did I, and again everybody and anybody was at this parade. Thank you again to Betty McLoughlin, what a great volunteer she is for the Irish American Society.

See you all again next week when I am Out&About again.

Share this:

Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)

Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)

Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)

Click to print (Opens in new window)

By Paddy McCarthy I have had a busy week Out&About.
