Fleadh Cheoil na h\u00c9ireann has returned after a two-year absence, being held this year in Mullingar, Co Westmeath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Michael D Higgins formally opened the celebration of music, dance, song and storytelling on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festival was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mullingar staging of the festival has been titled ‘The homecoming’ as the town was the venue for the first Fleadh Cheoil na h\u00c9ireann more than 70 years ago in 1951.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to visit the festival over the coming week as artists from around the world take part in 150 competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opening ceremony heard a tribute to primary school teacher and talented traditional musician Ashling Murphy (23) who died while out jogging along the Grand Canal in Tullamore, Co Offaly in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scholarships in Ms Murphy\u2019s memory will be awarded to musicians during this year\u2019s Fleadh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festival program will also include a special performance by a group of Ukrainian musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the opening ceremony, President Higgins highlighted the ongoing importance of traditional music in Irish culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMusic matters so much to us a nation, an artistic medium for which we have high culture and value,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt features centrally in our history and culture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fleadh executive committee chair Joe Connaire said: \u201cWe are so pleased to have finally arrived at this momentous gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are very proud that Fleadh Cheoil na h\u00c9ireann has returned to its roots here in Mullingar, where the first ever Fleadh took place, organized by founding members of Comhaltas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom just a few hundred people in attendance all those years ago, to the hundreds of thousands who will flock to the county this year, the Fleadh is intrinsic in preserving the legacy of Irish traditional music, dance and culture.\u201d<\/p>\n
