Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin has there will be challenges to offer support to Ukraine, as the war-torn country continues its bid for a speedy accession to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukraine is currently in the early stages of applying for EU membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Taoiseach said that for a long time he had backed a \u201cfaster, more accelerated\u201d process towards EU membership more generally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the ALDE (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe) party congress in Dublin, he said: \u201cWhat is vital is that we have acceptance of Ukraine\u2019s application to become a candidate country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt can take a significant length of time, but that would be a very significant decision in itself and a very significant message to the Ukrainian people, that you are part of the European family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd already, if you look at the interaction between the European Union and Ukraine in terms of customs, in terms of the welcome across the European continent for the Ukrainian people, it is very clear to me that the future of Ukraine is within the European Union.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Martin would not speculate on what the timeline should be, but said that he would be pushing for \u201cthe shortest possible timeframe\u201d for Ukraine\u2019s accession to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olha Stefanishyna, deputy prime minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine, who met with the Taoiseach at the ALDE congress, said that Ukraine needed to be granted candidate status by the EU, and that it needed promises to materialize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo we\u2019ve submitted the application, to be integrated to European Union, we need promises to be materialized into concrete decisions as a candidate status.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is the ultimate decision at this stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFurther discussions on an enlargement policy on the way towards membership, this takes time, we are ready to take as long as it needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Stefanishyna also praised Ireland for its support for Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to praise your personal commitment and the commitment of the whole government to host warmly the Ukrainian people the people who are running out of their houses and homes to survive the war, and particularly grateful to the Irish people, the hospitality and the warmth with which you mobilized your support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She asked that Russian officers be held accountable for their actions within Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing the ALDE congress on Friday afternoon, Mr Martin said: \u201cWe did too little to stand with the people of Ukraine after 2014. We did too little to reject Putin\u2019s new imperialism and his demand to control other countries in a sphere of influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe determination of the last few months must be maintained,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Stefanishyna\u2019s speech to the ALDE congress received a standing ovation from delegates.<\/p>\n
