{"id":26378,"date":"2022-05-26T15:15:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-26T19:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=26378"},"modified":"2022-05-29T10:17:38","modified_gmt":"2022-05-29T14:17:38","slug":"rhys-mcclenaghan-told-he-can-not-defend-commonwealth-games-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=26378","title":{"rendered":"Rhys McClenaghan Told He Can Not Defend Commonwealth Games Title"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"627\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/2-35894063.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/2-35894063.png 627w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/2-35894063-300x172.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><figcaption><em>Rhys McClenaghan won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games (PA)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rhys McClenaghan has been barred from defending his gymnastics title at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in a shock ruling by the sport\u2019s international ruling body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 22-year-old and two Northern Ireland team-mates have been told they are ineligible to compete in the event later this year because they routinely represent Ireland in worldwide Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McClenaghan, who pipped Max Whitlock to pommel gold on the Gold Coast four years ago, said on social media: \u201cEarlier today I was informed that the [FIG] will not be allowing myself and my team mates to compete at the Commonwealth Games for Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was born in Northern Ireland, my residence is in Northern Ireland and I represented and won Gold for Northern Ireland in the last Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel that FIG do not understand the gravity of the Belfast Agreement and the unique situation pertaining to Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery other sport understand the eligibility of Northern Irish athletes in accordance with Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would like to ask the FIG to reconsider their decision and allow us to compete at the Commonwealth Games.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gymnasts have represented Northern Ireland at every Commonwealth Games going back to Auckland in 1990. Gymnasts from other UK nations are unaffected because they hold Great Britain licenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commonwealth Games Northern Ireland issued a strongly-worded statement, accusing the FIG of having \u201ccompletely disregarded\u201d the Good Friday Agreement. PA Media understands the organization is considering legal recourse to overturn the ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHistorically, TeamNI at all Commonwealth Games has included athletes across a range of sports who have chosen to represent either IRL or GBR at European Championships, World Championships and Olympic Games,\u201d read the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe even have athletes within the same sport who have chosen different international performance pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis has always been respected and adds to the inclusive nature of TeamNI at Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe FIG appear to have completely disregarded the Belfast\/Good Friday Agreement and the unique situation pertaining to Northern Ireland. They are out of step with all of our other member sports.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Whitlock electing to miss Birmingham, McClenaghan would have been overwhelming favorite to defend his pommel title.
