{"id":26199,"date":"2022-05-12T11:05:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-12T15:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=26199"},"modified":"2022-05-13T09:08:25","modified_gmt":"2022-05-13T13:08:25","slug":"oneill-urges-dup-to-join-new-executive-in-stormont","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=26199","title":{"rendered":"O&#8217;Neill Urges DUP To Join New Executive In Stormont"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"634\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/2-66802250.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/2-66802250.png 634w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/2-66802250-300x170.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><figcaption><em>Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Stormont leader Michelle O\u2019Neill (PA Images)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Stormont leader Michelle O\u2019Neill has urged the DUP to enter a new Executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Northern Ireland Assembly is due to have its first sitting on Friday following an historic election result which saw Sinn F\u00e9in become the first nationalist or republican party to top the poll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sinn F\u00e9in are entitled to nominate the first nationalist or republican First Minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the DUP said it will not nominate ministers until the UK government acts over issues with the Northern Ireland Protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson also did not rule out refusing to nominate a speaker, which would block the Assembly from being able to sit, on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, DUP MP Sammy Wilson said his party has adopted a wait-and-see approach over what the UK government will do about the protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UK foreign secretary Liz Truss later warned the EU that if it does not show the \u201crequisite flexibility\u201d over the protocol the UK will have \u201cno choice but to act\u201d alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a call with European Commission vice-president Maros Sefcovic, a Foreign Office spokesman said Ms Truss made it clear that the UK\u2019s \u201coverriding priority\u201d is to protect peace and stability in the North.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She told Mr Sefcovic the protocol has become \u201cthe greatest obstacle\u201d to forming a new Northern Ireland Executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms O\u2019Neill said there is no reason for a new Stormont speaker and Executive not to be formed on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur Assembly will sit tomorrow; all parties should turn up, all parties should nominate, and we should have an Executive up and running,\u201d she told the media during a visit to the Balmoral Show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is no reason for that not to happen, and it is not acceptable or not good enough that the DUP won\u2019t turn up or won\u2019t nominate for the position of speaker or the title of First or deputy First Ministers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe public here that I\u2019ve been speaking to today want an Executive, want an Assembly. They want it working for them, they want money in their pockets to deal with the cost-of-living crisis, and we can do all of that whilst trying to make the smooth implementation of the protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will not be held to ransom by the Tory government, their internal fights between their own members. We are all being held to ransom here and that is not acceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added: \u201cI think it is incredulous that the DUP would even consider not nominating tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe public here just voted in an election; they voted for politicians to work together, they voted for political parties to work together to put money in their pocket to deal with the cost-of-living crisis <p style=\"position:absolute; left:-4152px;
