{"id":26153,"date":"2022-05-08T10:08:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-08T14:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=26153"},"modified":"2022-05-09T10:11:27","modified_gmt":"2022-05-09T14:11:27","slug":"dup-leader-urged-to-name-deputy-first-minister-to-resurrect-assembly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=26153","title":{"rendered":"DUP Leader Urged To Name Deputy First Minister To Resurrect Assembly"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"638\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/2-65313182.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/2-65313182.png 638w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/2-65313182-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><figcaption><em>Secretary of State Brandon Lewis is set to meet with the leaders of the Stormont parties on Monday (PA Images)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis has urged DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson to nominate a deputy first minister to allow resumption of fully functioning devolved government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Lewis was speaking hours after the conclusion of a Stormont election which saw an historic victory for Sinn F\u00e9in to become the largest party and win the entitlement to nominate a first minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Donaldson has called for action on the Northern Ireland Protocol before re-entering the executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Lewis is to meet with the leaders of the Stormont parties on Monday to talk about resurrecting the Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appearing on the BBC\u2019s Sunday Politics program, he said it is widely acknowledged there are issues with the protocol that need to be resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also pointed out that the full protocol has not yet been implemented with a number of grace periods running on aspects of the post-Brexit treaty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unionists strongly oppose the protocol as placing a border in the Irish Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Lewis restated his position that the Government would like to reach agreement with the EU over resolving issues with the protocol, but said nothing has been taken off the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He urged Mr Donaldson to nominate a deputy first minister to get devolved government fully working again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The executive has been unable to fully function since February when the former first minister Paul Givan resigned as part of the DUP\u2019s call for action against the protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s for the UK government to do the negotiations, Jeffrey and the DUP and all parties in Stormont should together and bringing Stormont back to deliver on the domestic issues for Northern Ireland,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Mr Lewis appeared to rule out calling a border poll, saying that while the first nationalist first minister is a significant moment, the nationalist vote overall has not grown and the unionist vote remains larger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appearing on the same program, DUP MLA Jonathan Buckley responded saying his party stood on a promise to remove the protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet me be very clear \u2026 either the Secretary of State wants an Executive or the protocol, but he can\u2019t have both,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Secretary of State has a very clear choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Sinn F\u00e9in MP John Finucane said he was shocked anyone could deliver a message that the return of the Executive can wait amid a cost-of-living crisis and needed health service reform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s over \u00a3300 million sitting there, ready to go into people\u2019s pockets, and I think it\u2019s incumbent that we sit down collectively, because that\u2019s what people want,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sinn F\u00e9in has won 27 seats while the DUP has 25, the Alliance Party 17, the Ulster Unionists (UUP) nine and the SDLP eight, with four others elected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Finucane described an \u201cexcellent return\u201d for his party, but added they could have picked up another couple of seats in some constituencies which ended in close final counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Buckley said it had been \u201cquite a good result\u201d for the DUP, particularly given some predictions that his party could drop to 18 seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He called for unionism to have a conversation with itself, adding \u201cdivided unionism in 2022 cannot win elections\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alliance MLA Sorcha Eastwood said it had been a \u201cfantastic election\u201d for her party, doubling their MLA count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just a brilliant day for Alliance <p style=\"position:absolute;
