Miche\u00e1l Martin said the plan could be very damaging to Northern Ireland and its tourist trade (PA)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Taoiseach has condemned British government plans that could see foreigners require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) pass when crossing the Border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plan has proved controversial even though the UK government insists it will not mean checks at the Border between the Republic and the North.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin told an Oireachtas committee: \u201cWe\u2019re engaging with the British government to try and change it with a view to ensuring that it does not interfere with mobility on the island.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said it \u201ccould be very damaging\u201d to Northern Ireland and its tourist trade, suggesting there is a \u201crange of issues that clearly haven\u2019t been foreseen\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Border proved a major sticking point in Brexit negotiations amid concerns seamless movement between the two jurisdictions could be affected by the UK\u2019s exit from the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not the first time the Irish Government has expressed alarm about the plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Northern Secretary Brandon Lewis said the proposals will not lead to checks at the Border between the North and the Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also stressed that the plan, contained in the UK’s Nationality and Borders Bill, will not have an impact on the Common Travel Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nonetheless

2pharmaceuticals.com<\/a><\/p> , some politicians and business representatives warned that the plan, if realized, could have a detrimental impact on Northern Ireland and mobility on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sinn F\u00e9in senator Niall O Donnghaile told Mr Martin it was \u201ccrazy stuff\u201d and \u201coff the wall\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Martin responded: \u201cI agree. It\u2019s hard to comprehend really from our perspective how this could get onto the table and I think it runs contrary to spirit of the Good Friday Agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the Government is aware of the problem and will continue to engage with the UK.<\/p>\n
