There is \u201cunwavering support\u201d from the North’s electorate for unionist leaders standing together against the Northern Ireland Protocol, the DUP leader has claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeffrey Donaldson addressed the latest rally to be held against the post-Brexit arrangements which see additional checks on goods arriving into the region from Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is strongly opposed by unionists as a border in the Irish Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Donaldson, TUV leader Jim Allister and loyalist Jamie Bryson addressed the event on Friday evening in Lurgan, Co Armagh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ulster Unionist leader Doug Beattie had been due to address the rally, but pulled out expressing concern that the anti-protocol rallies were raising tensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His decision came after a security alert halted a peace-building event in north Belfast which Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney had been addressing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Donaldson said his message is one of unionists working together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe must stand united. We must stand as one in opposition to the protocol,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnionism is fully entitled to express its unequivocal opposition to the protocol in a public and peaceful way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe protocol has undemocratically altered Northern Ireland\u2019s constitutional position and dealt a hammer blow to prosperity in all corners of our province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot a single unionist representative supports the Irish Sea border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur opponents see the election on May 5th as an opportunity to weaken Unionism and divide the anti-protocol cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf they succeed, they will use the result to justify the status quo and force the government to do nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe cannot allow that to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is critical that our families go the polls and transfer down the unionist ticket.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Donaldson also reiterated his stance that his party participating in the next Stormont Executive depends on the UK government taking steps to remove the protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cLet the enduring message sent out from Lurgan tonight not be about who did or didn\u2019t attend but rather about unionists standing together in principled and united opposition to these arrangements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Allister said any unionist who \u201ccomes to terms with the protocol\u201d is \u201cembracing transition out of the United Kingdom and into an Irish Republic\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSuch is the fundamental assault made by the protocol on our constitutional position that is irreconcilable with meaningful membership of the UK,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe core premise of the protocol is that GB is a foreign country and that Northern Ireland, in trading terms, is an integral part of the EU on what is to be the economically integrated island of Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAny unionist who finds nothing to protest about within the protocol and who, indeed, denigrates protests and protestors, sadly, but clearly, does not get the protocol or its Union-dismantling synergy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnionist voters who are dismayed by such complacency can, and should, express that disappointment by how they deploy their preferences in the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow is a time for strength, not weakness.\u201d<\/p>\n
