{"id":25549,"date":"2022-03-17T11:28:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-17T15:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=25549"},"modified":"2022-03-20T11:30:32","modified_gmt":"2022-03-20T15:30:32","slug":"st-patricks-day-festivities-return-to-ireland-for-first-time-in-two-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=25549","title":{"rendered":"St Patrick&#8217;s Day Festivities Return To Ireland For First Time In Two Years"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"634\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/2-65894574.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/2-65894574.png 634w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/2-65894574-300x170.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><figcaption><em>St Patrick&#8217;s Day festivities are back for the first time in two years and the weather has also been kind as people attend parades across the country (PA Images)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>St Patrick\u2019s Day celebrations are taking place across Ireland, with massive crowds on the streets of Dublin, after Covid-19 led to events being cancelled over the last two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cities, towns and villages across the island are marking March 17th after the easing of coronavirus restrictions, with an estimated 400,000 having attended people the traditional parade in Dublin and many more watching it live on TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 2020, swathes of St Patrick\u2019s Day plans were cancelled with the onset of the global pandemic, with parades axed in Dublin and Belfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The theme of this year\u2019s festival is \u2018connections\u2019, in a nod to people connecting through arts and heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, in Dublin, the parade began at Parnell Square and made its way through O\u2019Connell Street and around College Green, before winding through Lord Edward Street and ending in Kevin Street at around 2pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thousands descended onto the streets of the capital, with a sea of green blanketing the main thoroughfare of O\u2019Connell Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city was adorned with shamrock hats, leprechauns and long fake ginger beards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young children sat on parents\u2019 shoulders to get the best view of the vast array of marching bands and dance and musical groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of Ireland\u2019s Ukrainian community led the parade, with the Irish and Ukrainian flags held side by side in a sign of the country\u2019s solidarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olympic boxer Kellie Harrington and Paralympic swimmer Ellen Keane were the grand marshals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair waved at the crowds who lined the streets of Dublin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tokyo gold medal-winning boxer described the opportunity to parade through her local streets as \u201cfantastic\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor myself and Ellen to be grand marshals, two female athletes, it\u2019s amazing and it shows the strength in female sport, it\u2019s always been there,\u201d she told the PA news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo be chosen to walk through our city as grand marshals is fantastic. It\u2019s great to show younger kids coming up that if they work hard they can achieve anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am not just representing myself, I\u2019m representing the people of Ireland and the people of my community.
