A big result for the Alliance Party in Northern Ireland\u2019s Assembly election can herald the end of a political system based on binary division, leader Naomi Long has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing her party conference in Belfast, Mrs Long denounced rivals at Stormont whom she claimed were \u201caddicted to crisis and conflict\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The East Belfast MLA, who serves as Minister for Justice, stressed the need for major changes to power-sharing structures that are currently based on a community designation system that effectively hands blocs of unionists or nationalists a veto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs Long said her cross-community party hopes to build on recent strong electoral showings to secure an Assembly team big enough to deliver change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMay\u2019s election won\u2019t just determine how our politics works for the next five years \u2013 it will determine if our politics works,\u201d the party leader told delegates at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis May, together we can deliver a bigger Alliance team. A team that will not just deliver more and better, one that ensures that together, we can secure reform of the Assembly, move away from binary politics that seeks to divide people and ensure no one party can hold progress to ransom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference was held amid the backdrop of the latest power-sharing crisis at Stormont.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Executive imploded last month when the DUP withdrew First Minister Paul Givan from the administration as part of its campaign of protest against Brexit\u2019s Northern Ireland Protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move automatically ousted Sinn F\u00e9in deputy First Minister Michelle O\u2019Neill from office, and removed the Executive\u2019s ability to take any significant decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other ministers, such as Mrs Long, remain in post but are constrained in their ability to shape major policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There remains uncertainty whether a new administration can be formed on the other side of the May 5th election, with the DUP making clear it cannot be business as usual until Brexit barriers on Irish Sea trade are removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs Long hit out at the DUP\u2019s actions in a speech that also criticized Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s record in the Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe meet at a time when, yet again, our institutions are beset by instability,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe absence of a First Minister, while no longer able to cause the collapse of the Assembly has deprived us of that working Executive, at a time when many key decisions still depend on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re emerging from a pandemic, fighting a battle against climate change, facing a cost of living crisis, and there\u2019s a war on our doorstep in Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is not the time to walk away from government, this is time to lead in government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith so much important work to do, it is hard to fathom how we are again without an Executive only two years after restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt seems that some politicians are addicted to crisis and conflict, and simply not up to the job of actually governing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople have had enough of the constant dramas and the political soap operas. They want politicians who don\u2019t just identify more problems \u2013 or worse still, add to them \u2013 but who are focused on finding solutions, on making things better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut it doesn\u2019t have to be like this. Yes, we know there are huge challenges ahead \u2013 from the climate emergency to the spiraling cost of living \u2013 but together, we can face them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs Long concluded her speech with a rallying call to the party faithful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe we have the people, the policies and the passion needed to build a truly progressive, inclusive and prosperous future for all of our people \u2013 to deliver the transformation our public services, our politics, our people so desperately need,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd on May 5th, together, we can. And we will.\u201d<\/p>\n
