Twitter has said access to the platform is being restricted in Russia in the wake of the country\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a tweet, the company said it is \u201caware\u201d that access to the platform has been restricted for some people in Russia, adding it is \u201cworking to keep our service safe and accessible\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NetBlocks, a London-based company that monitors web outages and internet access throughout the world, reported access to Twitter and its backend servers is being \u201crestricted on leading networks\u201d in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It added: \u201cCircumvention is currently possible using VPN services, which can help users work around the online censorship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Friday, Russia limited access to Facebook after the social media provider refused to stop fact-checking and labelling content from state-owned organizations, former British deputy prime minister Sir Nick Clegg said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian authorities announced the \u201cpartial restriction\u201d after the social media network limited the accounts of several Kremlin-backed outlets over the invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian state communications watchdog Roskomnadzor said it had demanded that Facebook lifts the restrictions it placed on Thursday on state news agency RIA Novosti, state TV channel Zvezda, and pro-Kremlin news sites Lenta.Ru and Gazeta.Ru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Clegg, vice president of global affairs at Facebook\u2019s parent company Meta, said that \u201cordinary Russians are using our apps to express themselves and organize for action\u201d and the company wants \u201cthem to continue to make their voices heard\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He tweeted: \u201cYesterday Russian authorities ordered us to stop the independent fact-checking and labelling of content on Facebook by four Russian state-owned media organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe refused. As a result, they have announced they will be restricting the use of our services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOrdinary Russians are using our apps to express themselves and organize for action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want them to continue to make their voices heard, share what\u2019s happening, and organize through Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.\u201d<\/p>\n
