The head of An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na has had his term of office extended to 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a meeting of Cabinet on Tuesday, the Government approved an extension to the term of office for Garda Commissioner Drew Harris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Harris, a former deputy chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), took up the role in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His term in office had been due to expire next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is the first garda commissioner to be appointed from outside the State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement on Tuesday, Mr Harris said he was \u201cdelighted\u201d by the Cabinet decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a great privilege and honor to be Garda Commissioner,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDuring the last four years, the organization has made great progress in becoming an efficient and effective human-rights focused policing and security service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn particular, the work by Garda personnel during the Covid-19 pandemic was a real demonstration of the organization’s commitment to keeping people safe through our ethos of policing by consent and in partnership with communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHowever, while we have made many significant changes to the organization in recent years, the pandemic also meant that we had to put on hold some of the elements of our reform program that we had planned to introduce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI look forward to leading An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na in providing the best possible policing and security service to the people of Ireland.\u201d<\/p>\n
