Mr Martin told reporters on Wednesday the Government will give \u201cclarity\u201d later this week regarding plans to ease Covid rules (PA)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Taoiseach has said the country can be \u201coptimistic\u201d about the future, amid growing expectation that Covid-19 restrictions may soon be lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miche\u00e1l Martin told reporters on Wednesday the Government will give \u201cclarity\u201d later this week regarding plans to ease Covid rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Public Health Emergency Team (Nphet) will meet on Thursday to discuss the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Martin said: \u201cThe Government will meet on Friday, and then we\u2019ll give clarity to the public at large and to the interests that are very concerned about the situation and want that clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll take it step by step. The Omicron situation, the manner in which that has happened, the widespread nature of its transmission and so on, and the fact we have managed so far to weather that storm, gives us grounds for optimism in that medium term right out to March.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he warned current infection levels remain \u201cfairly high\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Green Party leader Eamon Ryan suggested Covid restrictions may be lifted from the end of next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Ryan said he expects the Government to start lifting restrictions \u201cquickly\u201d and \u201cwidely\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comments come as health officials point to signs that the latest wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, fueled by the Omicron variant, has passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Ryan told RT\u00c9 radio on Tuesday that he believes restrictions can be lifted as soon as the end of next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cabinet subcommittee on Covid-19 will meet on Friday to discuss the possibility of an easing of restrictions, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Ryan said the Government aims to give the public and businesses \u201cadvance notice\u201d, and indicated there will not be any change to the rules this weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe position we\u2019re in at the moment is a lot better than it looked a couple of weeks ago,\u201d Mr Ryan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest indicators suggest, he said, \u201cthat it is going to give us the chance to start lifting restrictions quickly, in my mind very widely\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cI think we need to start bringing back some of our social life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He indicated that sporting, cultural and artistic events will be among the priorities when restrictions do ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also said he would like to see people returning to offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is important that people who are working from home do start to have the chance to go back in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Mr Ryan also indicated that requirements regarding the wearing of face masks are likely to remain in place, even if the vast majority of restrictions are relaxed in the spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday, T\u00e1naiste Leo Varadkar told a meeting of the Fine Gael parliamentary party that the low level of hospital admissions, ICU admissions and deaths has given \u201ca strong degree of confidence that we can ease restrictions quickly over the next few weeks\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added a caveat to his remarks to TDs and Senators by saying \u201cwe cannot promise anything yet\u201d, party sources said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legal basis for the restrictions is set to expire at the end of March, but the Government has the option to extend them for another three months until the end of June.<\/p>\n
