{"id":24064,"date":"2021-11-22T08:58:09","date_gmt":"2021-11-22T13:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=24064"},"modified":"2021-11-22T08:58:13","modified_gmt":"2021-11-22T13:58:13","slug":"olio-app-aims-to-help-reduce-food-waste-in-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=24064","title":{"rendered":"Olio App Aims To Help Reduce Food Waste In Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-63888369.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24065\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-63888369.png 540w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-63888369-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><figcaption><em>Tessa Clarke (left) and Saasha Celestial, founders of Olio (PA Media)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumers are being urged to sign up to a new app to stem the rising tide of dumped food in Ireland \u2013 estimated at more than 19,000 tonnes a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The food sharing app Olio connects neighbors to give away unwanted food and other items that may otherwise end up in landfill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahead of its official rollout in Ireland, word of mouth has already generated more than 36,000 sign-ups, with users giving away 10,500 food portions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dublin is the most active county, followed by Cork, Kildare, Galway and Wicklow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olio co-founder and CEO Tessa Clarke was inspired to build the app in the UK five years ago after struggling to find anyone to take unwanted food from her fridge when she was moving house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople in Ireland have an innate sense of community and food is valued,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey also like to give and care about each other and the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy enabling people to easily share more and waste less, we aim to help transform our throw-away society into a giveaway society.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dubliner Lindsay Ray, 38, has so far given away 121 items and collected 69, saving the equivalent of 56 meals and 18,000 liters of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are already close to 2,500 people living within a 5km radius of me in Rialto on the app, so there\u2019s an active group of people sharing and giving away,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI use Olio when doing a clear-out or if I come across something I no longer need. I\u2019ve given away tea, coffee, tins of soup, lentils and pasta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cApart from the decluttering benefits, it feels really great to be able to give to others, while reducing waste.
