The Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) will not be reintroduced alongside the new measures to tackle the surge in Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite demands from opposition politicians earlier, the Government said on Tuesday evening that the PUP will not be reintroduced alongside the new measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin on Tuesday evening\u00a0announced new guidance designed to address a major rise in Covid-19 cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pubs, nightclubs and restaurants in Ireland will have a midnight closing time from Thursday, as part of the raft of measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys said: \u201cThis isn\u2019t like a previous lockdown where the entirety of the economy is closed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a curfew, not closure,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said that the hospitality industry would still require staff, despite the new measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the major problems facing businesses at the moment is that they can\u2019t get staff,\u201d Ms Humphreys said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are no plans to reopen PUP at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI do accept that nightclubs are impacted by the midnight closing time. But they will be able to avail of supports, such as the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are a lot of opportunities out there at the moment,\u201d she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have seen the signs up saying \u2018staff wanted\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Humphreys also said that she anticipated that some venues may be able to adapt the new rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome venues will adapt to the 12 o\u2019clock closing time and still keep some of their staff employed,\u201d she told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said that social welfare supports remain available for anyone who does lose their job.<\/p>\n
