{"id":23981,"date":"2021-11-14T15:19:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-14T20:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=23981"},"modified":"2021-11-15T10:22:19","modified_gmt":"2021-11-15T15:22:19","slug":"lisbon-lion-bertie-auld-dies-aged-83","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=23981","title":{"rendered":"Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld Dies Aged 83"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"638\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-22420668.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23982\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-22420668.png 638w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-22420668-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><figcaption><em>Auld was part of the Celtic &#8216;Lisbon Lions&#8217; team which won the 1967 European Cup (PA Images)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bertie Auld, one of Celtic\u2019s European Cup heroes, has died at the age of 83.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The midfielder scored 85 goals in 283 appearances over two spells for Celtic, the most famous game of which was the 1967 European Cup final win against Inter Milan in Lisbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A club statement read: \u201cEveryone at Celtic Football Club is devastated to hear of the passing of Lisbon Lion, Bertie Auld, who has died at the age of 83, and the thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Bertie\u2019s family at this extremely sad time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBertie was a legend of the club for his many achievements in the green and white Hoops throughout his playing career and he was adored by the entire Celtic family for the passion and love that he always showed for Celtic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Auld, who won three Scotland caps, also played for Birmingham and ended his playing career at Hibernian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as the Hoops\u2019 Lisbon triumph, he won six league championship medals, four Scottish Cups and five League Cups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After hanging up his boots, Auld went on to manage Hibs, Partick Thistle \u2013 whose Firhill ground was just a goal-kick away from Panmure Street in Glasgow where he was born \u2013 Hamilton and Dumbarton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Celtic remained his first love and he spent his later years regaling the Hoops faithful with stories in the club\u2019s hospitality suites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The club announced in June that Auld was suffering from dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Celtic chairman Ian Bankier said: \u201cThe most sincere thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic are with Bertie\u2019s family at such a difficult time following this tragic loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think words can ever adequately describe what Bertie meant to the club and our supporters. He was a giant of a player, a giant of a man and quite simply Mr Celtic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe scaled the greatest of heights as a player with his talent, but it is who he was as a man that made him so much more to us all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe enriched all our lives so greatly with his humor, his character and personality and for that we will forever be grateful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was an absolute privilege to have known Bertie and I know just how deeply his passing will be felt by all Celtic supporters. Bertie will forever be regarded as a Celtic great and he will forever be in our hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe all mourn his passing with great sadness and, of course, we offer our full support to Bertie\u2019s family. May you rest in peace, Bertie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Nicholson, Celtic\u2019s acting chief executive, said: \u201cBertie will always be remembered as one of Celtic\u2019s greatest ever sons, part of a team that delivered the greatest prize of all to the club and its supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe brought so much joy to Celtic supporters on and off the field and we thank him and pay tribute to him sincerely for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was an absolute joy and privilege to be in Bertie\u2019s company and his brilliant spirit and sense of humor will live long in all our memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe loved the club so much and, in turn, he was so deeply loved by us all as Celtic supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBertie was just unique, there will never be another like him and this really is a very sad day.
