Michael D Higgins welcomed the German President to his Phoenix Park residence on Wednesday morning, marking the start of a three-day visit by Frank-Walter Steinmeier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German head of state arrived at \u00c1ras an Uachtar\u00e1in for an official welcoming ceremony just after 11am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was greeted by the President and his wife Sabina Higgins and a guard of honor from the 7th Infantry Battalion from the Cathal Brugha Barracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Steinmeier also received a 21-gun salute from the Irish Defense Forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three-day visit will see Mr Steinmeier, who has been Germany\u2019s president since 2017, visit several locations in Dublin and across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Steinmeier, who arrived with his wife Elke Budenbender and an official delegation, is expected to hold talks with Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin during his visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He will also meet with D\u00e1il Ceann Comhairle Se\u00e1n \u00d3 Feargha\u00cdl, as well as the Lord Mayor of Dublin Alison Gilliland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Irish President visited Germany in July 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That visit came amid uncertainty about Brexit and the shape of the UK\u2019s exit from EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This presidential trip to Ireland will also include a visit to the University of Limerick, where Mr Steinmeier will meet with students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Irish and German delegations are expected to discuss issues around democracy and global justice.<\/p>\n
