{"id":23647,"date":"2021-10-27T12:06:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-27T16:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=23647"},"modified":"2021-10-27T13:09:06","modified_gmt":"2021-10-27T17:09:06","slug":"public-services-in-the-north-get-2-2-billion-boost-in-uk-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/?p=23647","title":{"rendered":"Public Services In The North Get $2.2 Billion Boost In UK Budget"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2-63351864.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2-63351864.png 540w, https:\/\/irishexaminerusa.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2-63351864-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><figcaption><em>UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak (PA) <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Public services in Northern Ireland are set to receive a \u00a31.6 billion ($2.2 billion) boost, the UK chancellor has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, while Rishi Sunak hailed the largest block grants, in real terms, since the devolution settlements of 1998, local politicians described a \u201ctough budget for people struggling to make ends\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his budget speech to the Commons on Wednesday, Mr Sunak also announced a 50 per cent cut to air passenger duties on flights between the UK countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK government is to provide \u00a315 billion per year to the Northern Ireland Executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has been described as a 2.2 per cent rise in the Stormont budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The North is also set to benefit from UK-wide support for people and businesses, green jobs and investment while targeted funding will support local projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These projects include an electric vehicle charging network and the redevelopment of a derelict UK Ministry of Defence site in Co Derry into an urban community farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There will also be \u00a31 billion for farmers and land managers and \u00a39.3 million to support fisheries, the establishment of a new trade and investment hub in Belfast and the continuation of the \u00a3400 million New Deal for Northern Ireland investing in infrastructure and boosting economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Sunak said the budget aims to focus on health, public services, jobs and tackling climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cThe UK Government is committed to levelling up opportunity and ensuring Northern Ireland feels the strength of our Union with a record \u00a315 billion per year for the Executive \u2013 we are better together as one United Kingdom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis described the announcement as significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cFrom \u00a370 million to champion thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises to \u00a349 million coming from the Levelling Up and Community Ownership funds, the opportunities for Northern Ireland are immense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However SDLP leader Colum Eastwood claimed the budget \u201cignored the cost of living crisis\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cIn the past few months alone we have seen spiraling fuel costs, Universal Credit has been cut by over \u00a31,000 a year, inflation is on the rise and national insurance contributions are set to increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Chancellor had a choice today \u2013 he could have protected the most vulnerable in society from the cost of living crisis \u2013 but in typical Tory fashion he has chosen not to, instead presenting a Budget that does more to help those who are already thriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBuried within today\u2019s Budget is a three-and-a-half billion tax break for banks, while ordinary people are left to suffer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alliance MP Stephen Farry criticized the Budget for \u201cfailing to produce a green deal\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cDespite the spin by the Government, this is a tough Budget for people struggling to make ends meet while facing a spiraling cost of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt also represents a serious missed opportunity for the UK to embark on a Green New Deal, combining action to address the climate emergency with a new approach to economic opportunity and social protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Government is not providing sufficient investment in a green transformation, skills and job creation. With the UK set to host Cop26 next week, the Chancellor couldn\u2019t even make one reference to the climate crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ann McGregor, chief executive of NI Chamber, said while the budget contains some measures which will help economic recovery, an expected inflation rise of 4 per cent means trading conditions are going to \u201cremain very challenging\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added: \u201cIn principle, we welcome additional funding for the region via the block grant and will await with interest, to see how businesses here will benefit from it.
