An estimated 65,000 children aged 12-15 have registered for their Covid-19 vaccine within 24 hours of the portal opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It comes with more than 80 per cent of the adult population in Ireland now fully vaccinated and around 90 per cent partially vaccinated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HSE chief executive Paul Reid said it marks a \u201cvery strong point\u201d of the country\u2019s vaccine program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vaccinations of children and teenagers will begin this weekend, with more than 23 per cent of those aged 12-15 registered to receive the jab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs of this morning we\u2019ve almost 65,000 12 to 15-year-olds have registered on the online system,\u201d Mr Reid told RT\u00c9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOverall it does reflect a very strong point of the national vaccination program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re now at 6.28 million vaccines in total administered here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt represents a very strong point of the program that we\u2019re at, and specifically for 12 to 15-year-olds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany of those who will have registered yesterday will have already received appointments for this weekend, I\u2019m very happy to say that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur teams and vaccination centers are strongly focused to try and get this job done rapidly and quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are, however, concerns among the rising number of people in hospital with the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are currently 207 people in hospital and 37 of those are in ICU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Reid said there has been a steady increase in the number of people admitted to hospital in recent weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve all seen there\u2019s a lag effect between high levels of case numbers and hospitalizations, and we are kind of following that trend again,\u201d Mr Reid added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs case numbers have risen over the previous two or three weeks, we equally have seen hospitalizations follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLooking forward, a lot depends on what the trajectory looks like for next few weeks. I think we can all take very strong confidence from the vaccination program of where we at and the expected benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that while it hasn\u2019t reached previous high levels of 400 patients, it could still reach high numbers, with further admissions expected throughout August and in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Reid also said there is a \u201chugely compelling argument\u201d for distributing vaccines to the world\u2019s developing countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He rejected suggestions that Ireland is hoarding vaccines, adding that it is administering all the vaccines it is currently receiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that as the vaccine program moves forward, the Government will decide on how they are used and distributed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t been hoarding vaccines, what we have been doing is, quite efficiently, on receipt of vaccines is storage, distribution, administration, that\u2019s what we were continuing to do,\u201d Mr Reid added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe supply lines that we have coming into us at the moment are primarily the mRNA vaccine supply lines, which has just over 200,000, and that\u2019s still what we\u2019re administering, that\u2019s exactly what we\u2019re administered this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo we\u2019re still on a very efficient distribution and administration of vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUltimately, as we move forward, the government have committed to almost 78 million vaccines through the EU process and again, there are decisions for government for the future as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
